Recently acquired a stainless MSTN QC brake and mounted it to one of Denny's recon barrels. This is going to be a totally stupid question, but which side of the brake points up and is there anyplace to get the thin shims that come with the brake? I need at least 2 or 3 more of the shims.

Ok, good. I at least have that right then.
So where can I get the shims? I found out I will probably only need 1 or 2 now. Could I use a washer from the hardware store? Maybe the hardware store sells this size shim? It's killing me because it's the last thing I need for my upper...  -X |

Try using a good old peel washer. These were used prior to the introduction of the crush washers.

Ant, I am VERY happy! Thanx for the barrel, brake, bolt, and CH. They are just as you described them. Sorry we had that slight misunderstanding at first.
Can I use a peel washer for this application? I guess it won't hurt to try. I'd really like to get more of the shims, so I guess I'll have to make some calls on Monday to find out about them. -X |

Just use a peel washer. The one I have came with the shims, but there wasn't enough of them to time the comp. I used a peel washer. Works fine.

Peel washer is the ticket. However, IF you so inclined, the brake body can be timed - clamp it to a vise and file some material off the back where it touches the barrel shoulder or shims, make sure that the filing is done perpendicular to the brake body. Go extremely slow with this process because you can easily overtimed it.

I was under the impression that for precision shooting, a muzzle device with radially symetrical baffles/slots/apetures (like the supposedly accuracy-increasing Vortex) would give best results, as the gas venting around the bullet is evenly didtributed. Given that many match shooters use this brake I could be wrong.

The brake WES sent me for my AR's 18" barrel came with a standard crush washer.
I filed it down so only a quarter turn was needed to time the brake and used a little loctite on the threads. |

I wouldn't worry about getting one in stainless, the black looks fine with the stainless barrel and slightly polished brake.

would probably have to order it.
the peel washers are silver colored if it really bothers you and would probably be the easiest thing to use to correctly time the brake. |

I ordered two QC brakes from PRI, one for 5.56 and one for 6.8. One came with shims, the other didn't come with anything. I was still waiting on my 6.8 barrel so I used the shims on my 5.56 barrel. It only took a couple (IIRC one 3 mil and one 5 mil). A call to Dave Dunlap at PRI and he sent me another set of shims. I thread the brake on hand tight. Initially I would have to retighten the brake by hand every 10 rds or so. To solve the problem, instead of Loctite I use teflon thread tape. I clean these barrels every 100 rds or so, so loctite doesn't have time to set up if I'm at the range. |

Wes, mine came with the silver shims. I had to put it on and take it off a couple of times but the right number of shims were with it.
Midwayusa stocks the crush washers and they are a little over a dollar each. My Bushmaster brake appeared to have blue locktite on it. |

This one shoots 0.5MOA at 200M with Hornady 75gr TAP & BH. My 2nd one shoots about 0.65MOA at 200M with the same loadings.

When y'all get sick of crush washers, peel washers and shims, you can send me your barrel & comp and I will time the two so that they tighten into proper index by trimming the torque shoulder.
It's a whole $10 service. Yeah, I know, that's more expensive than a crush washer, to each his own... As for the MSTN QC brake, I have installed a bunch of them on 6.8 uppers for customers. I never really shot a barrel with and without the brake until last weekend. The MSTN QC brake is VERY effective. Good job Wes, I'm putting one on my personal 3 gun rifle now. |

Randall,
While it is okay to time the comp by turning the shoulder, you should be aware that the comp was designed to be mounted with either shims or a crush washer. The only difference will be the relative position of the muzzle crown to the 1st baffle. If the crown is too close to the baffle, e.g. if it is mounted with no spacer, the brake will be somewhat louder to the shooter than originally designed. It will still brake effectively and accuracy will not be affected, just a bit noisier. They do look cool that way though...  Thanks for the testimonial on the brakes. We spent nearly a year getting them to work as well as they do. The .308 version is starting to get a lot of play with the Heavy Metal crowd too. |

I know about keeping the crown 1/8" back from the 1st plane of the 1st baffle.
JP recommends the same thing with their BC comp so that you effectively have a cone of gasses that projects forward and has to hit the 2nd plane of the first baffle. |

I need a brake to be able to install on my AR10 to replace the old tank brake that was removed over a year ago.
Are the threads the typical 5/8x24? |

The .30Cal & 6.8SPC MSTN brakes are 5/8x24. I have two, one in 5.56MM and a .30Cal. They work very well, particularly the .30Cal on an AR10. |

yeah, the design is very similar to the AR10's original 2 port brake but I'm betting the baffle spacing and angle helps it be less abbrasive to the shooter while still maintaining very decent recoil management properties.
Nothing is so downright nasty and awful than that of my JP Recoil Eliminator on my 223Remington, that thing directs more blast at the shooter than anything I have ever seen. Shot it 2 times in the past without hearing protection, once to see how bad it was and another time when I forgot to replace one cup of my hearing protection after talking with a fellow shooter. Absolutely brutal even after 24 inches of barrel length. I've shot my 300WinMag once or twice without hearing protection, nowhere near as bad. |
