Looks great! What receiver block are you using to mount the receiver in the vise? Did you need to use the strap wrench to tighten down the Noveske?
PRECISION REFLEX UPPER RECEIVER BLOCK. THIS ONE IS DESIGNED FOR THE AR-15 ON ONE SIDE AND THE AR-10 ON THE OTHER. THEY MAKE ANOTHER THAT IS FOR THE AR-15, RIGHT SIDE UP, ON ONE SIDE, AND UPSIDE DOWN ON THE OTHER. THE STRAP WRENCH WAS USED FOR BOTH THE LARUE 12.0 HANDGUARD NUT AND THE NOVESKE KX3. WES GRANT MSTN.BIZ |
If one was to permanently attach the KX3, would it make the barrel the legal (i.e. 16")?
ETA: Nice pics! |
NO, IT WOULD NOT. I'M NOT A BIG FAN OF PERMANENTLY ATTACHED ANYTHING, MYSELF. I LIKE TO BE ABLE TO TAKE THINGS APART AGAIN! WES |
how much would an upper like that cost?
also does your strap wrench have the fabric strap or rubber? i tried using the rubber one and it never worked for me. great choice in torque wrench |
Wes,
I don't want to start anything but, how are the 12" barrels compared to the 10.5"or 14.5" as far as velocity? Yes, I am aware these are very new but, I'm sure some one has tested them... Looks to be a very nice in-between length. Weazer |
Pat Rogers had a 12.5 when I took a class from him in May. The velocity should be right between the 10.5 and the 14.5, and the reliability much more consistent than the CQB-R. Someday I shall own a 12.5. |
Very interesting.
And now here I am deliberating for the umpteenth time on my first sbr upper build.......... |
THANK YOU. I USE THE RUBBER STRAP WRENCH WITH EXCELLENT RESULTS. WHEN I NEED MORE TORQUE THAN IT CAN PROVIDE, I GO TO THE ONE WITH THE NYLON STRAP. COST ... DEPENDS ON HOW YOU WANT IT DRESSED OUT: TROY SIGHTS? TA-11B IN LARUE MOUNT? LARUE 9.0 OR 12.0? TYPE BOLT CARRIER? I WENT SHOOTING THIS PLUS SEVERAL OTHER UPPERS TODAY. YOU ARE NOT GETTING THIS ONE. IT WENT UNDER 0.40 MOA FOR FIVE SHOTS AT 100 YARDS. NOT BAD FOR A BARREL A LITTLE OVER A FOOT LONG ... PIX COMING. WES GRANT MSTN.BIZ EDITED TO ADD: IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME, I DON'T BLAME YOU. I WOULDN'T, EITHER. |
FORGIVE ME FOR STATING THE OBVIOUS, BUT I CAN'T RESIST: IN BETWEEN THE TWO. ME, I'M LIKING THE 12.5" LENGTH, ESPECIALLY SINCE IT ALLOWS THE LARUE 12.0 TO COVER THE WHOLE DANG BARREL. LOOKS RATHER FETCHING WITH THE KX3, AS WELL, IF I DO SAY SO MYSELF. WES GRANT MSTN.BIZ |
Wes,
What ammo did you use for that group??? Just curious... They do look sexy with the LT 12.0. Weazer |

IT WOULD LOOK A LOT LIKE THIS 12" 6.8 SPC: WES GRANT MSTN.BIZ |
Go figure, as soon as I make the decision and follow through with buying the 10.5 you have to show me the 12.5
P.S. I hate you |
What is the price? If John can cut two out of one blank they should be 270. Otherwise, 370. That's a prettty big difference.
Back on topic Wes- What sort of demand are you seeing with the surge of new barrel sizes? |
how much would an upper as pictured in the first post set one back?
MSTN, I am going to be installing a LaRue 7.0 next week on my LMT upper when it comes in the mail. I would like to know do you always use a Tokque wrench and how much pounds of tokque do you use on the barrel nut?
That is so kickass. Should I be worried that I've reached a point that AR-related tools fascinate me as much as AR's themselves? |
Wes I am going to be selling my M962 series soon and am thinking of replacing it someday with the exact light setup you have pictured above. I'm using the exact same setup as you (CQD VFG and Larue rails) and was wondering how the thumb reach is on yours?

EVEN SHORTER REACH, SINCE THE M600A IS TUCKED IN A BIT MORE CLOSELY. WES GRANT MSTN.BIZ |
Stick- that was meant as a joke On a more serious note, has anyone ever chronoed one of these? If the same velocity increases are reported for the 12.5s as for the 10.5s, we have a serious little spitball shooter here. |
Combat Jack has sold me on the 12.5". Hopefully I'll be placing an order in the next 6-10 months. I am beyond jealous of your new toy, Wes.
HERE WE ARE IN FULL TEST CONGIGURATION WITH BIG NIGHTFORCE SCOPE. IF YOU'RE NOT CHEATING, YOU'RE NOT TRYING, AND I WAS TRYING TO SEE WHAT THIS BARREL WOULD DO.
IT WAS A BIT COLDER THAN IT MIGHT APPEAR, IN THE 40'S. ONE UNLUCKY SNAPPING TURTLE PICKED A BAD TIME FOR HIS LAST BREATH OF FRESH AIR BEFORE SPRING ... OR SHOULD I SAY LAST BREATH? LAST, WE HAVE THE UPPER IN IT'S MORE REALISTIC PRESENT CONFIGURATION WITH TRIJICON TA-11B IN LARUE ACOG MOUNT: WES GRANT MSTN.BIZ |
IT ONLY WEIGHS ABOUT A QUARTER POUND MORE THAN A 10.5" WITH A LARUE 9.0. THE FOREND RUNNING ALL THE WAY OUT TO THE KX3 DOES GIVE IT A BULKY OR HEAVY APPEARNACE.
WES GRANT MSTN.BIZ |
I assumed as much but, I know what happens when I assume something... So I thought I would check.. Weazer Weazer |

Very cool.
What is the length from the front end of the top of the receiver, to the front end of the KFH? |
WITH JUST A TAPE MEASURE, 15 5/16 INCHES. WES GRANT MSTN.BIZ |

PROGRESSIVE MACHINE. $80. ALLOWS YOU TO USE THE ACOG AT CLOSE RANGE AS AN OCCLUDED EYE GUNSIGHT. IT WORKS FOR ME! WES GRANT MSTN.BIZ |

doing my SBR paperwork know.......cant decide on a 10.5 JN or the 12.5 JN..........lifes full of hard dec..........
Yeah, life is rough sometimes! Is there a way that you could split the difference and go with an 11.5"? |
10.5 is good for getting in and out of vehicles and tight spaces.....12.5 gives me almost the same size with a veloc. boost and the plus of being able to mount the SF can which is the next addition to it..........12.5 and 10.5 are both "stock" sizes that JN crank out.........relly want to see a JN 12.5 with a convetional sized flash suppresor (A2, Vortex, phantom) sitting in a 9.0 Larue...............maybee somebody will grant me my wish...................Then LW has to go and do something silly like mount them in the piston upper which looks really slick..................
Wes, that is an awesome build, I still have a problem with the asthetics of the brake but......
Respect man. |
Vortex.............................. |
Wes, about the stock that you've got on it, is that a VLTOR? Do you get a better cheek weld with that over a conventional M4 stock? By the way, I really like your gun, sharp build!
Wow, that looks very nice, I bet it shoots even better. It looks like he had to reprofile the barrel for the LW system. Question is, how much does it weigh? Weazer |
Will these fit the 31f? Where can I get one? |
YOU CAN GET THEM FROM M.S.T.N.
THE TA-31F VERSION IS IN WORK. I'VE GOT A COUPLE HUNDRED ROUNDS DOWNRANGE WITH THIS COMBO. I AM AMAZED AT HOW WELL IT WORKS. WES GRANT M.S.T.N. |
somebody prob. already posted this but........A E-Mail to JN asking the same thing (difference in average vel. from the 10.5 to the 12.5) got me a reply from JN himself stating that it is approx a 200 fps gain over the 10.5.(dont know what ammo) Cant wait for the SBR paperwork to come back.............. |
