I've heard about free-floating a barrel for years, but I don't actually understand what the term describes.  And on an AR, how does the gas block and gas tube not affect this?  Also, how does a forearm free-float around a barrel?  I've never checked the mechanism on my AR close enough to see how it could work.

Rather simple explanation via the pic :

The barrel nut of some fashion holds the barrel onto the uppers as normal, then a tube is attached to the barrel nut to hide/cover/provide handguard/decoration....  The short section of tube screws onto the barrel nut.  These are 9mm, but gas operated be somewhat similar.
