All I know is that it is just a redesign. Apparently it does nothing the older nut did (as in it does not lock like a LaRue).

If you mean for the regular free float (non-monolithic), it is a small design change on the lock nut to allow the use of a DD special spanner wrench - instead of a strap wrench.
I think JTAC had some pics of it. |

So the change is to the locking ring and not the barrel nut? |

I have not had a chance to handle it yet, but yes - that is the way I understand it. I believe it also has T-markings. |

so does the wrench come with the rail or have to be purchased seperately?
or can the stock spanner wrenches be used? |

The ring looks too big for a stock spanner wrench, IMO.
I'd be interested in trying one of these sometime soon. |

Separate purchase. A strap wrench works better on these nuts also.

So what's the point in redesigning the locking ring if a strap wrench works better than the wrench to be used with it? Seems to me the old multi-faceted locking ring would offer more friction, and therefore easier to tighten

Didn't mean it works better than the spanner, I meant it seems to work better than on the last iteration of the lock ring. I imagine the spanner would work quite well, I just didn't have one on hand.
ETA: On using the strap wrench on the new ring, IMO it works better because you have more surface area in contact on both than with the older ring. J |
