Normal. I must be tone deaf, because I never hear it.
ETA: That Vortex looks so plain. It needs something, but I'm not sure what.

I hear it when loading, but never when shooting. Its normal.

I have heard it too, even directly after I pull the trigger. Nothing wrong with it. Just think of it as a tuning fork that hides flash.

Deaf as a post here. Then again, if I did hear it ---- so what? Also, keep in mind that the testing at Aberdeen now underway, this "tuning" issue (if you can call it that) is a non-issue. You should also be aware that at normal and extended battlefield distances, the ARDEC and ARL testing has concluded that the Vortex is acutally more difficult to pinpoint accoustically than the conventional OEM FH's on the M-4/16, M249 and M-240. You may wish to do an FOIA search to obtain the data once it's out for the public domain.

i like to use cream cheese in my vortex...it really plugs up the ol' ring Actually Mark, the vortex self-tightens so no worries about it being loose. I'm not aware of mine making a ring, but it may be and i don't hear it. I do feel that the muzzle blast has significantly decreased since replacing my A2 brake with the vortex. I'll get flamed for this, but I swear it's quieter. |

I have Vortex G6's on two 14.5" AR's. One is on a RRA the other is on a Bushmaster. Both were perm installed by ADCO. The Bushmaster rings (I can hear it after each round), the RRA doesn't.

I have an old Vortex, a new Vortex, a Mongortex (
 ), an HK 53 four prongs flash suppressor, a Steyr short flash suppressor (also four prongs), another Vortex for a Remy 700. All of them will make the tuning fork noise.Wanna try something fun? Use one of the open ended flash suppresors to hit another, together they make beautiful songs

I've heard the "ring" from a non-smith Vortex (clone). But.. only when someone else was shooting it. KAAPRiiiingg! ..... if that helps.

Well, I would also consider that you have a free floating barrel, which is like a giant tuning fork and you have those 2 springs on your bipod that make a lot of noise during firing as well. I have the same problem, if it could be called a problem, with mine, but I've just learned to live with it.

Like a tuning forkif you add something to absorb the vibration than I'd assume it won't ring anymore. A rubber o-ring around the tines perhaps? Would this last..probably not.

What if somebody were to try and make a closed end Vortex similar to a 5C1 Phantom???
I can live with the ringing, I think. Time will tell.... I use electronic hearing protectors (Peltor), and maybe that is enhancing the sound, it is pretty loud really. I also hear it when I drop the bolt release. Not a big deal as I noted, just a curious observation. |
