After feedback from AR15.com for their new #17 rail (for the carbine gas system), The original link for the first prototype #17
MI (Midwest Industries) now has a prototype of their new variation of the #17 - called the #17X (X is for eXtended ) Here are some First Look pics "in the white" The #17X is designed for the carbine gas system. It is a 2 piece design (non FF) that features a non-gunsmith install. Final designs will feature the same dark hardcoat anodized finish and laser etched T-marks that their #17 has. What do you think ? |
looks interesting.
when is that comming out. and what will the price be. |
No offense meant.
But, It looks like all the others of that type. Let's talk price. |
The biggest difference is that is a 2pc. It installs inplace of the standard plastic handguards. It locks into the delta ring at the rear and uses the tension from the handguard cap at the front. It can be removed and replaced in a similar maner as the regular handguards, -- No tools required -- No gunsmithing required.
Final versions should be released in about 3-4 weeks ? Not exactly sure on pricing yet, but it will be about Edited to fix estimated pricing. |

What happened to the lower rails from below the FSB? Why not leave it there like the KAC FF RAS MRE and DD12.0 FSP?
More to my point..... what ever happened to the rifle length version?
Because of the way it attaches, those FF models attach by removing the FSB and/or barrel nut. I have not held this new prototype yet (to inspect and install it), but my guess is - if it had a lower rail it would hit the sling swivel and bayonet lug as you installed the lower portion of the handguard. It installs (snaps in) like your original plastic handguards, so you would have to angle it as you put the front against the handguards cap and then pull the delta ring back to lock the rear in place. I hope I explained it well . . . thanks! |
The #17X is still a prototype, the rifle length is past the prototype stage. Not exactly sure on the Rifle length ETA, but it should not be long? thanks! |
The KAC FF RAS MRE and DD 12.0FSP are kind of oval to accomodate the bayo lug. But look at the bright side, you can use a bayonet with this new handguard
Oh, I was on the fence there for a little while, but you just sold me. |
Oh hell. Now I need one of THESE too. Simply because I'd like to mount my light further out on the 9 o'clock rail. Dammit Paul |
Waiting on rifle length.
Revelation. That is a seriously bad-assed HG. I have been praising the #17 to whoever will listen. Way better unit than YHM. MI crushed my yearning for a KAC HG. KAC and the heavy price tag can kiss my....................... It's time to get busy building my M16A4gery. Once again, optics go on the back burner. HS1 |
Thanks. By the way. I can see some use for this new design. Pushing a flashlight further forward being one of them. I'd like to see it all dressed up (finished.) I'm glad they put the cutouts for the KAC panels into this one, and that they made it to fit the TD VFG. |
KAC panels fit and lock perfectly on my MI #17 HG and the TDVG is manufactured to be exactly to MIL-SPEC for a Picatinny Rail. Any idea if MI will make a rifle length version of the unit you've shown? HS1 |

Hohohoho, it's coming!
So now, is it going to be books or a sweet handguard this semester.. ahh, decisions. |
No handguards for you! Now get back to the books..... the college needs your money. |
I beleive they will (not sure on ETAs, though) In the works right now are various 2pc and a monolithic FF design in a variety of sizes. thanks! |
on another note, when a final version is release the pricing will only be about $30 more than the standard carbine 2pc handguard.
(I had originally quoted an estimate of 50 more -- above) thanks! |
I went one semester without buying a single book, even taking the finals without owning one of the text books. And this was all while in advanced business classes. Just make friends in the classes and borrow the book when they are not using them. Or find someone else in teh class and go halves on the book. Or post in GD about you are a poor college student and want to own a badass handguard you dont really need. Please donate. I am sure there are many people here who would help you out. |
Can you by any chance get some pictures of the whole machining process? I am really interested how this goes. What the raw forging looks like before it even begins to be milled etc. |
I choose a 1400 dollar guitar once over books. Still have the guitar. Forgot all the shit from those classes. LOL. |

PAUL
Here is a update for all of those interested parties. The first shipment of 17x will be ready for delivery to BRAVO the end of next week.Mid and Full length to come shortly . TROY MI |
Yea a little bird sent me an IM and told me that. Although my stupid messenger didn't save it. But I have dusted off the handguard removal tool so I'm all set. Probably an intensive range and photo session in my future. |
weight is right around 15oz. including the front trim cap.
TROY MI |
Yup, all of the MI hanguards will take the optional offset mount thanks, Paul |
Is the trim ring just for cosmetics, or is it somewhow required?
Y'know, I'm kinda wishing that the bottom rail was extended, since bayonets seem a little frivolous. I'll still buy one of these, though, like a good consumer whore. |
No rails for you! (unless you post pictures) |
Yup, just cosmetics. They are going to be included with the rail, but installation is optional. |
See, now THIS is what I was really wishing for when I bought my YHM 2-pc rails in December.
This is gonna make FIVE different rail/handguard systems I have put on my carbine at one time or another. Oh well. At least I love my hobby. |
Is ther a chart for weight comparisson between the standard version, the x, and the rifle model? If not, can we bild one?
Didn't notice they were up on the site yet!
Order placed. (Hey, can you guys get some cheaper VFGs in? I'd have been interested in one ~$10) |
the #17 is approx 11.9oz the #17X is approx 15oz (both are for carbine gas systems) Rifle and Mids are in the works, but no weights yet. thanks |
Very nice, thx for the pics. The price is very resonable, hopefully within the next few weeks I can grab one of these for my rifle.
^_^_^ |
I've never figured what I'd put on the top and bottom rails of my KAC FF RAS MRE. sp0rk posted pics of his tiny IR laser, that'd be perfect for the tiny amount of rails ahead of the FSB, click here to see his pics
