well for one, you're gonna need an AR-10 lower. .308 is too long for an AR-15 lower.

Yeah 308 uppers don't work on regular AR lowers, you need an Armalite AR10 lower, which is different (larger).
Although it is possible to build a 308 lower/upper a regular AR would be the place to start for now, in my opinion. For the most part AR-15 lowers are the same, as long as they are forged, not cast. You can get some pretty large caliber uppers for an AR-15 lower. The .50 beowulf is a short range cartridge but looks pretty similar to 45-70. Mega, stag (which is basically the same as Rock river Arms) are the two popular less expensive lowers, though there are lots of other ones that are prefectly fine |

go with 556 unless you really want 308... i don' think ar's are best in the 308 caliber regardless of making (ok maybe sr-25)...
if you want 308.... get a fal,g3, or maybe even a cetme... |
