I'm new to the AR world and the first question I have is this: Are there any BIG differences between lowers? I am planning on purchasing a .308 upper. What does everyone generally use?

well for one, you're gonna need an AR-10 lower.  .308 is too long for an AR-15 lower.

go with 556 unless you really want 308... i don' think ar's are best in the 308 caliber regardless of making (ok maybe sr-25)...

if you want 308.... get a fal,g3, or maybe even a cetme...

Forged vs Cast
Sear Block of some type vs Accepts DIAS
Colt vs Regular pin sizes and take town pins
Teflon coated vs Anodised Type III
There are some billet specialty lowers

All the major manufacturers will be the same for you.  Bushmaster, Armalite, RRA, etc.
