The lighter barrels never seem to group too well once they got pretty hot. This should take care of that.
RRA 16" Varmint barrel, KG black, exposed portion contoured to the Vortex.
DD 12.0 w/Steel barrel nut modified to fit over the barrel. I have some real high expectations, just need a chance to get to the range!

OK, I can see the pic, now. Different compooter, different location. Sexy! I like the Vortex and matching contour. I'm in the process of building another carbine.

I'm expecting much better than MOA

This is just something I built for myself to see how it would come out. The barrel, contouring, painting, custom gas block, modified tube and barrel nut. It would be right around $800.00. You can have the one pictured if you want, I can always make another for me

Sweet looking rig but I have a question... If accuracy is the main goal of this rig and obviously weight is not an issue so than why not use a longer barrel? I know the main reason for a longer barrel is added velocity (which may not be an issue for this rig depending on its purpose) but it has been my experience that longer barrels tend to be more accurate (maybe because of the added velocity?).

Did you use a mid-length gas system?

Barrel length has nothing to do with accuracy. IMO the distance that .223 is really worth anything - a 16" plenty. And if its a well aimed/placed shot, from a real accurate upper...

I also went with 16" for size. I'd like to have a small case I can put in my trunk, with 1 lower, a CQB type upper, and a "precision" upper if that makes sense.

heres a better pic of the barrel, and if you look close you can see how the gas block is blended into the barrel so it matched the larger countour under the handguards.

holy cow steve... thats very very close to the next setup i wanted... a short accurate rifle...

i orignally thought to make the rifle with an 18" barrel use the larue 12.0, krieger barrel, with a vortex... and maybe play around with the possiblity of using a med. contour barrel... such as the SPR... just so it isn't so increadably heavy...

i can see that a 16" w/ vortex is a good length.... i still like the larue 12.0's... any real pratical accurate difference between your rra barrel and what a krieger would shoot...

how do you think the countour would really effect accurace? how would the weight differ?

* oh and BTW what is the standard weight of of a lower? that saying... a2 buttstock, a2 pistol grip? and obviously the insides....

I too have been thinking of a short barrel rifle like this. I was thinking of getting an 1/7 mid and cutting it to 14" and putting a OPS Inc. brake from Brownells on it, and rifle length handguard. Do you think this would be a waste of a gun?

This is exactly what I had in mind when I built my 14.5" HBAR. Its the perfect gopher gun for getting in and out of the truck, and I could care less how much it weighs. And the gophers could care less about my bullet velocity from a 14.5" barrel.

i thought you wern't supposed to use crush washers with vortex's...

is it just me or is that vortex shorter than normal too?

Don't think he is. Looks to me like a VERY nice job of blending the vortex shoulder and barrel shoulder. Look behind what looks like a crush washer and you will see the wrench flats on the hider.

no crush washer or peel washer required with a Vortex, as stated in the directions that it comes with

There are a couple drops of 262 holding that one in place though.

No, its a regular G6A2 Vortex.

The shots that aren't touching are my fault. It was a lot colder than expected, and I wasnt dressed accordingly. Here are the 5 shot groups with Black Hills 68gr. at 100yds. It lived up to expectations to say the least!

What exactly do you have to do to the DD barrel nut to make it fit over the barrel? Does that ruin it from fitting on a standard HBAR in the future? What kind of gas block is that you're using?

I believe you have to open up the opening of the barrel nut a smidge, as it doesn't fit over a bull style barrels, best done on a lathe, but some here have opened them up with Dremels and such.

Thanks for the inspiration, Steve, as this will be one of my first projects on my lathe, once I get it running. Maybe I'll do it in 18", sort of SPRish, maybe...........

The ID of the barrel nut has to be opened up a smidge so it will fit over the heavy barrel. It wouls still work fine on another barrel. The gas block is a greatly modified varming gas block.
