I want to install a YHM quad rail tube on my 9mm AR. I am concerned about taking off the barrel nut. If I take it off, is the barrel still pretty solid in the receiver or will I have to check the head space again after putting the forend on it? Is this something a first timer can do pretty easily? I don't really want to send the upper off if I can do it.

Fooling with the barrel nut has absolutely no effect on headspace.

It's easy to yank barrels.

A good armorer's wrench, a 3-4" vise,  and a reciever block is all you need.

Also, maybe some snap-ring pliers to get the delt ring assembly off.

That's what I needed to know. Thanks a lot!

You will need the YHM spanner wrench for the locknut. It also has the properly spaced pins for adjusting the barrel nut position. The locknut has square edged notches around the rim. Do not be tempted to try the hammer and chisel method. The locknut will peen and look trashy if you do. The wrench sells for about $25. It is well made, works well, and it's worth it.
