Going to order a varmint upper but not sure which twist 1/8 or 1/9 or ?
Also the chamber should be .223 or 5.56 & is there a great advantage to have
free float handguards or not? Pretty much decided on 24" barrel.
Thanks in advance for the assist...

1/8.

More versatile.  Should be able to handle heavier loads better, but still allow you to shoot the lighter 50's as well.

Go with a 1:8 bbl with .223 Wylde chamber and definitely get a FF tube.

It is the middle ground between a NATO chamber and a SAAMI chanmber.  Rock River Arms makes barrels with the Wylde chambers.

Long range accuracy go 1/8, for me a varmint rifle is just that, for varmints, coyote size and smaller.  I am shooting 45-55 grainers and the 1/9 works best for those.  If it were me I would go 1/9.

1/8 shoots 45 grain varmint rounds PERFECTLY.  Dont let people tell you it doesnt.... they are full of it.

Go 1/8  Give you a bigger range of heavier rounds.  You will like playing with the 77gr SMK's, which you cannot do with the 1/9.

I have the RRA, Wylde chamber, Wilson Barrel varmint upper in 1/8, and it shoots alomst everything well, from 45gr wichester varmint to 77gr black hills blue box....

I'd go 20" tho.  I think 24" in .223 is a waste.  It  just doesn't buy you anything..... but weight.
