Airborne, it depends on what the role of the gun is INTENDED for. As a sniper rifle, it would work if you have NO objects to penetrate, and you are within a reasonable distance (dicated by bullet type and weather conditions). Is it the best? Nope. It just depends on the job you intend on doing. Many will argue that as a sniper you don't need the rapid fire capability that you have with the AR. I tend to agree, most police dept shootings are within 75 yds, BUT, you will generally only need one round if the shooter does his/her job (gotta be PC here).
It all boils down to the specifics of the mission you are assigned. HTH |

As TNRonin points out, the primary reason for sniper rifles being .308 or larger is because .223 doesn't create enough damage after barrier penetrations, which is a common requirement in a sniper situation.
Also, the range in which .223 can be really effective as a "one-shot, drop-like-a-light" round is less than 300m, even with the best ammo and a 24" barrel. While that's more than enough for a police sniper, it is woefully inadequate for a military sniper, who works under a vastly different set of circumstances. -Troy |
