CHARACTERISTICS OF THE QD-223 DESIGN.
Our design staff recognized that the rush by military and law enforcement agencies to adopt 5.56mm weapons – especially short-barreled ones to replace 9mm SMGs as entry weapons, has created serious tactical challenges.  Borrowing lessons learned in developing our MP S-9 suppressor used by USMC and USSOCOM units, and more recently our MD-30S sniper rifle suppressor adopted by USSOCOM, we have developed an extremely robust and effective QD suppressor.  The compact dimensions of the QD-223 design makes this unit extremely effective for use in cramped spaces and is most appropriate for an Entry Gun such as the Colt M-4, our own COMPAK-16 or our Recon Rifle.  This suppressor unit was designed for an exceptionally long service life.  All internal components are manufactured from 17-4 stainless tool steel.

Our design objective was to develop a system significantly superior to the currently fielded M4A1-issue QDSS, in terms of system reliability (e.g. accuracy), return-to-zero, service life and of course, sound and flash suppression.  Our design allows the expansion chamber and the blast diverter to isolate the projectile from propellant gasses facilitating a redirection of turbulence.  This allows the projectile to proceed through the suppressor array well ahead of the propellant gasses and particulate matter.

The Quick Detaching (QD) mounting system is extremely rugged and reliable.  Most importantly, it only allows the suppressor to be attached to the associated flash hider if done correctly.  In operation, an alignment stud within the body of the suppressor sleeve slips into one of the corresponding special grooves in the flash hider body.  When fully on the flash hider, the gate at the rear of the suppressor is then swung into it’s corresponding radial grooves on the flash hider, which when properly installed corresponds to the minor diameter of the flash hider body. The sleeve is then rotated to secure the suppressor to the flash hider. This can be done only if the gate is completely shut on the flash hider.  In this manner, we have designed a truly safe and reliable mounting system.

The standard flash suppressor is based on the new G-6A1 variant of the patented Smith Vortex design.  The Vortex as supplied, is designed to work with an optional Blank Firing Attachment (BFA).   This vastly improved and very robust BFA will also work on the M-16A2/A4, M4 and M249 Squad Automatic Weapon.
