I've been planning on building a SPR for quite a while, but haven't had the time to make any decisions nor the money to follow through with them.

I'd like to hear your ideal configuration.  All you have is an 18" barrel and a lower receiver.  How do you configure the upper?  Which front sight, handguards, upper receiver, etc will you pick?

Let's try to stay below $2k, so don't go hog wild!

$175-Armalite Upper
$350-KAC FFRAS
$175-KAC RAS Mount Front Sight
$100-KAC Low Profile Gas Block
$200-Smith Bolt/Carrier
$175-KAC 600M Rear Sight
$025-PRI Big Latch Charging Handle Latch

$1200 for the upper

$250-KAC 2-Stage Trigger
$240-MAGPUL Stock from MSTN
$060-Colt H2 Buffer
$025-Ergo Ambi Grip (Suregrip)
$085-Norgon Ambi Catch

$660 for lower parts

So $1860 total minus optics. And I overestimated on some of the parts cause I was a little too lazy to look them up, sooo... You may be looking at a few hundred less, hehe.

Depending on your sources, about $200 less.  YMMV.

Where's the bullet launcher?  I think the Douglas SPR profile bullet launcher with fitted bolt from CLE goes for about $450 from MSTN.  Correct me if I'm mistaken.

The most ideal configuration I can think of is the one I should be shooting with you the first weekend in November. [;)]

I am sure it will help you make up your mind.

I've been wanting to build a "poor mans" version for some time

I keep thinking  I'd start with
RRA 18" 1x8 varmint upper with the mid-length
gas system & then add a mid-length SIR & maybe
an ACOG or a fixed 6x scope, maybe a 2x7.
PRI front sight,big latch, & ARMS #40

I'd drop this on one of my RRA lowers with a VLTOR stock.
maybe get the barrel fluted or turned down by KKF & then some type of matte coating

I dunno, just what I've been kicking around....

EDIT to add I may start with a 16"
mid-length CAR A4 stainless upper instead

I would recommend the MOD 1 configuration.

I think the Kac FF RAS is a must. It is simple and lightweight.

With the RAS, you can use the KAC 600m back up rear sight, which I feel is more suitable as a backup given the weapons range and precision capability.

The KAC gas block that MSTN offers is a great alternative to the NAVSEA manufactured AP-M4 gas block.

Really I just bought one of Raptor22 SPR uppers. I was going to build one but he gave me a offer I could not refuse. So is this one he built or one of your? Now if my scope and rings will come in..2 more days must be patient!!! also what kind of ammo gives the best results? im going  shooting this weekend the targets are about 300 yards, so I should be hitting bottle caps right?? just curious as to the accuracy I should expect from this upper.

  Thanks FREE

Hey Free, Are those scissors part of the new G.I. sewing kit? [:D]

Who makes an 18 inch AR barrel with the mid length gas system? I know I can have a custom barrel made like CLE or others...I've done that. I need a barrel in about four weeks. Armalite does not make an 18 inch barrel. I do not think RRA makes one either. Is there a "factory" 18 inch medium or lightweight contour barrel with the mid length gas sytem available?
I just remembered that Les Baer makes an 18 inch stainless barrel in 1/8 or 1/9 twist but it is a heavy profile and cost is $385.

Lumpy, man you always get the best pics!

Brou, talk to Wes or Paul at MSTN about what you want to build and your budget. They will, without question, be the best source of not only knowledge and parts, but quality service as well. They'll let you know the propper parts and pieces to use for a true clone, and/or any hybirds or non traditional combinations.

If you order one day, you may very well have it the next. MSTN is no joke, they are the real deal, so are the guns they build.

ROBE,

I WOULD SUGGEST STICKING WITH WHAT IS PROVEN TO WORK. THE FULL LENGTH GAS SYSTEM WITH OUR 18" 5.56MM SPR BARRELS HAS RESULTED IN 100% RELIABILITY FOR EVERY ONE WE'VE BUILT SO FAR. NEVER EVEN SO MUCH AS A HICCUP DURING BREAK-IN OR ANYTHING.

Wes, I think you are correct. I got one of your SPR uppers from you like that and it has ran perfect. The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of the 18 inch barrel and full length gas system.

I know of no "factory" medium or lightweight 18" uppers available with a mid-length gas system, (the 18" RRA upper is a heavy barrel)

builds 18" Kreiger barreled uppers utilizing the mid-length gas system & Armalite free-float tubes, not quite an SPR but I'm sure he could configure the upper any way you wanted him to, Barry turns the Krieger blanks down himself, so I imagine he could make a lighter contour.
I doubt the 4 week deadline would work though.
