It looks very nice, and that target is impressive, but really what will this round offer (I apologize in advance if [beathorse])?
Greater Barrier penetration. Less affected by wind. At the expense of..... Lower magazine capacity. [b]27-28 rounds in standard mags, not bad[/b] Heavier. [b]this might still be an issue although the rifle itself is said to weigh the same, the new mags and ammo are more[/b] No fragmentation??[b]definately with AMAX and sounds like yes on FMJ also.[/b] more recoil and wear out rifle faster.[b]wouldn't be an issue if recoil was similar to 7.62x39[/b] harder to control in full auto fire.[b]stated as on par with 5.56 and 7.62x39[/b] not a very flat trajectory.[b]sounds like to 300M the trajectory is very similar to m855.[/b] more expensive to produce.[b]more powder and more lead will always mean more cost[/b] enlighten or humor me. Yojimbo, I think I gave up on that thread on page two or three (all the top secret mumbo jumbo [:D]). Pages 4 and 5 are just getting good. So far (still reading) I can definately see it's usefulness for specific roles at this time. Sounds pretty awesome with the AMAX. I hope nothing ever comes of this upper or round for the civilian market (or that it proves to be not useful). Cause then I'll have to rethink my whole arsenal. [banghead] Edit post above with answers I've found so far. |

Ugh! Stainless Barrels with crowned muzzles or blast enhancers (Muzzle Brake)!
Those PRI mags are restricted to Govt/LE only. although there is a rumor floating that a conversion follower will allow you to use a standard M16 mags with a slight reduction in capacity... |

As far as the mag issues goes, certain vendors will allow you to turn in your old mags for new 6.8 mags...

I wonder if this caliber is being considered for LMG use as well, such as the M249 / MK46 platforms.
This cartridge weapon combination would probably make for a pretty handy belt feeder. |

Under federal law a high capacity feeding devise modified to use a new caliber or for a new firearm, must also still work in the original caliber/firearm. You cant exchange a USA 15 Rnd Beretta mag for a PRI 6.8x43mm mag. You can convert an M1A mag into a AR10 mag, as long as the mag will still work in the M1A. So a follower swap in an existing M16 magazine should be legal. a complete swap is not. |

Now I really can't wait for the AWB to sunset.
Am I correct in assuming that existing receivers sans barrel and bolt work? Is Frank White at Compass Lake Engineering geared up for this yet? I think I'm going to be selling my 16" heavy barreled A2 at this weekend's gun show to help fund this baby. |

I think I'm going to be clearing out some 5.56 uppers to finance one of these. Can't give up on 5.56 altogether though!
Does this mean NATO will pick up this new round? If not, cheap mil-surp ammo won't be obtainable. |

If they did they would have designed the cartrige to work with existing bolts and magazines. It will be "sucessfull" in the way the .499LW, 50Beuwolf, and .300 Whisper are. |

AR15fan is correct this is why the 6.8 SPC stands for special purpose cartridge. As far as commerical success, it will have to wait and see, but the potential of this round is so amazing it will definitely go a long way in the military and LE field. as fas as civilian, I can see this as a very successful hunting cartridge also. 6.8 is my wonder round. |

I think the 43mm length has to do with the fact that the overall length of the cartridge is so restricted. Because the bullet is wider, it needs to be a little longer to have a decent ballistic coefficient. Because the length of the cartridge is fixed by the length of an M16 mag, they needed to reduce the case length a bit.

Are budget strapped police departments, that already spent tens of thousands of dollars on 5.56mm patrol rifles, magazines, and ammo, really going to want to spend all those equipment and training dollars again?
It took 30 years for my agency to go from .38 Spec to 9mm, another 10 years to start phasing in the 40SW (still not complete). We have Bought somewhere around 400 5.56mm Colt rifles so far, with orders in for about 1200 more. I cant see agencies in that type of position "upgrading" to 6.8x43mm BTW: Is frangible 6.8x43mm ammo even available? Most major LE agencies are using frangibles in their 5.56mm rifles for training and qualification. |

I am afraid you don't have a video of the 6.8 mm; the video at the address you noted was of the Alexander Arms 6.5 mm Grendel--probably a fine target rifle and cartridge, but it is not a 6.8 mm.
