Forward as much as possible without getting too front end heavy.

Mounting your red dot forward give a much wider field of view for fast target acquisition.

Note: I am able to do this because the RAS handguard, if you have a double heat shield M4 handguard, you are limited as how far forward you can mount your EOTech before the battery compartment can't be removed.

One more theng about mounting forward, ti can cause the gun to feel front end heavy, and that is like a big heavy car, hard to get rolling and tough to get it stop.  slow start up and over swing often associates with front end heavy guns.

I mount mine same as above though I have the 551 which is a bit shorter.  Some folks mount them waaaaay out there on the forend but to me it is like SMGLee stated, way to front heavy.  I find mounting it far foward yet still on the upper reciever puts the balance just right.  Kind of like a seesaw with the EOTECH's weight combined with FF RAS bbl. nut acting like the fulcrum.  Easy up and on target fast.

I mount mine as close as possible while still allowing for mounting NODs and my BUIS.

That isn't very close though (about as far forward as the one SMGLee showed- maybe a little closer.)

the closer it is the larger the veiwing window appears to be allowing me an easier time aquiring the reticle (if it is mounted way out (like on the end of a SIR the reticle becomes hard to see clearly and hard to keep somewhat near the middle (which is where I like it to be- that is just personal though ))


[b]If you want field of view (the closer the better) the field of view is what you see through the glass- if you want more peripheral vision the farther it is the better as less of the hood will screw with your peripheral vision.

the only other problem with large peripheral vision and small FOV (mounted way out front) is that the targets become harder to fit within the window- not much harder but hard enough that it will slow you down once and a while.[/b]


I was using an aimpoint this weekend (and aimpoints have a lot more material than EO's in the way to screw with peripheral vision).  As long as you keep both eyes open you will see every target that presents itself. Close your left eye and you would be in trouble though.  way out front is great if you can't bring yourself to open both eyes.

I run mine about the same position as SMGLee. I've had good luck with it there. Plus this positioning will adapt to a potential PVS 14 mount behind the optic for night shooting. And can also give enough room that I can still work the controls on the M 552 if the rear BUIS is in the upward position.

Yes.  I've mounted mine with the screw through the last slot on the upper.  (I have a standard upper handguard).

On the EOTech, there is the slot on the bottom that actually lock the unit to the rail. that slot is about inch and half across so if you mount the EOTech to the first rail from the delta ring, you should be able secure it in that position. as far as using a standard handguard, the EOTech will clear the standard handguard with no problem.

Im with Forest.  I have my EOTech with the screw in the last slot on the receiver.  The EOTech's clamp is fully in contact with the upper, so it is solid as can be.  And the front hangs over my M4 RAS.  I feel that this gives you an optimal combination of balance and field of view.

I have the SIR 50 so I have to forward mount over the handguards.  I like it there and it's really fast to use.  At first I thought it might be awkward but after putting my carbine though it's paces it seems very natural worked great for me.

I don't find it to be too front heavy and I still don't have any problems with using a one handed grip while reloading. As always, YMMV![;)]

I don't mind it like this at all. The balance is also different with this gas system (so this postion might give a better balance).

One thing I have noticed is that the reticle seems to grow quite a bit when I hold the sight farther out. It SEEMs to me that with the sight closer to my eye that I can get better precsion distance shots, because the center dot is smaller. The opposite might also be true, that with the sight farther away it would be faster because the circle/dot is bigger.  Any feedback on this (or do I need to get my eyes checked [:)])??

Yojimbo, I can see why you don't have any problems with it being front heavy with those pythons (you could hang a couple bricks off there). [shock]

As far forward as possible, but adjust it for your liking.

Mine could be moved back a bit more, but I just don't like it that far away. Use what's best for you.

I like it pretty far back.  To me, the reticle gets too grainy if it is way out over the handguard.

thats crazy, if i try to mount my 552 like that, it won't sit totally flat..  it gets caught up on the handguards, and it sits at an upward angle..  i just tried to mount it like that again after seeing yours, but when you look through the glass, the reticle has obviously moved up. and its obviusly sitting at an upward angle..   and yes I have standard A2 handguards.. heres a pic with it as far forward as I can get it.   http://www.geocities.com/ryanb_a3/my_AR_552

edited to add: Forrest, what brand handguard do you use?  mine is all BM factory stuff.

Upper handguard is a factory Bushmaster CAR type handguard.  I did remove the 'tabs' that is uses to lock into the lower handguard.  My lower handguard is a Fobus M33 also with tabs removed.

The Fobus uses a different tab system than the Bushmaster so both of them had to be removed so they would sit flush with each other.



Things I'd check:
1) make sure the handguards are together and there is no gaps.

2) if you can try using another upper handguard (with the lower one removed).

3) make sure the flat side of the handguard is really at 12:00 and not slightly cocked to one side.

It may require some 'play'.  First time I tried it, I couldn't get it to work - turns out my handguard was slightly off.

Along these lines, I just purchased an ARMS #39 for my Bushy A2 and was considering the EOTech.  Obviously, I was planning on mounting it way out front (I like the large FOV), but now I read in another post it won't co-witness on that mount.  Is that correct?  I take it that it stands too high?  Am I forced into going with the Comp M?

I have the exact same problem as Klinger with my set-up.

Forest...that's a great idea swapping out the lower handguard for the M33. What mods did you have to do to your three point sling to get it to work with the light set up? (Is that a Giles sling?)

No the sling isn't Giles's, its a Tactical Taylor (basically a Giles with the quick release and wider webbing).  I have the strap that wraps around the handguard between the forward grip and the GG&G offset light mount (so it isn't going anywhere).

BTW that's a Surefire G2 with Z32 anti-shock bezel - its a temporary setup.  I'm going to replace it with a Surefire 6v weapon light (uses the same bulbs as my handheld lights).
