What do the holes around the bore on the suppresor function as on the M4 96-D?  How heavy is the unit off and on the gun.  How quiet would you say the unit is without hearing protection.  Would you say that there is a dramatic decline in audible rifle report?

I'm not exactly sure what you mean when referring to the holes around the bore.  If you mean inside the suppressor, the baffles are asymmetrical and that is Gemtech's design secrets.  The flashider becomes part of an expansion chamber I think.

You notice that I only have my M4-96D mounted on short barrel's - 11.5" units, cause I don't like it sticking way out, and it balances nicely in that configuration.  I just had a bilock mounted on a true M4 upper, will let you know how that feels in two weeks or less!
The model without the QD mount weighs less.

I don't listen to any firing, suppressed or not, without hearing protection cause my hearing is sensitive.  It doesn't hurt, I just don't like it.  Without hearing protection it sounds like a .22lr cause of the supersonic crack.  The only firing I like to hear without protection is an integrally suppressed .300 Whisper or a nice suppressed .22lr rifle/pistol, cause with those, you only hear hammer strikes and bullet hits, and the pistol adds bolt cylcling though my Gemtech Operator has a bolt hold device to eliminate even that...

AK_Mike - should that be "pistol *aids* bolt"...???...

Any reason to choose Gemtech over AAC m42000?  Both seem great and am trying to decide.

How quiet the gun is depends a lot on the length of the barrel you are shooting.

With my 10.5" and 11.5" uppers and the M496-D I still use hearing protection. It's not loud enough to hurt my hearing, but loud enough to be annoying.

With the 14.5" M4 upper I don't use hearing protection. There is the crack of the supersonic round, similiar to a 22lr but at a different tone. No problem shooting all day without hearing protection.

On the 20" upper the M496-D really is very quiet. More quiet than the 14.5", but you still have the supersonic crack. Maybe it's quieter because the muzzle is farther away, I dunno.

The M496-D is the only 223 can I have, I have no experience with the AAC M4 2000

No, I meant ADDS.  As in, the bolt cycling ADDS that noise to the sound of the shot, and the bolt hold/lock device removes that extra sound.

If you are only considering the AAC M4 2000 and the Gemtech M4 96D- the choice is pretty obvious.


AAC M4 2000 (it offers 2DB [even though they claim it is three] more sound suppression, a QD mount that doesn't bind, similar size, relatively light weight, and high resistance to full auto abuse.)

The M4 2000 will however produce some backpressure (caused by the high efficiency high pressure design) expect to at a minimum buy a PRI Gas buster charging handle and possibly replace your gas tube with a PRI Fat Boy gas tube (if you want it to cycle as close as possible to exactly the same as it did before the sound suppressor was installed.) The Fat Boy tube will reduce excessive suppressor related Bolt Carrier group fowling to a minimum.

The more sound reduction the more the suppressor retains heat.  Plus the AAC flash hider is ugly. [:p]
