I want to put a short accessory rail on the bottom of my 20" rifle handguards. The only thing I'd hang off of it is a flashlight. Anyone doing that? (If so can you post a pic?)

I have both the standard A2 handguards that taper, and the Cav Arms handguards that don't taper. I'm not sure if the taper would make that much difference.

Any suggestions on which rail to use? It probably only needs to be about four inches or so long.

If you have the C5 (no taper) handguards you can just add the CavArms polymer rail.  Apparently it can be trimmed to fit your use.

Otherwise there are metal/alloy(?) options out there.  See GG&G www.gggaz.com or AAC http://www.advanced-armament.com/ar-15.html.

Good luck and let us know what you do!  (Pics always help. [;)])

www.sogarmory.com has a lot of interesting rail/adaptors/mounts.
Some are from GG&G and ARMS; some I don't recognize.

This might be something you could use:

Denny's Guns is selling rails for tapered handguards on the EE. You might also consider the Fobus M33 handguards, just using the bottom half with a regular upper half, and trimming the rail cover to fit behind your weapons light.

The first one from SOG is some kind of fiber material. http://www.sogarmory.com/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=101227

Don't know how long it is. Great price though!

Yeah, I don't really know anything about it.

It caught my eye though because I had just read a "how to" article on the maryland AR shooters site on attaching an accessory rail to the handguards and it seemed like the little rail from SOG was a very similar idea.

Oops, I missed the fact that you said you also had a standard (angled) set of handguards.

If you want to mount to these definitely get Denny's GTS angled rail.  I have one and it is a good solution for angled rails.

I only recommended the straight rails for the C5 handguards.

The SOG rail is 2 1/4" long. If anyone is keeping score, the GG&G adaptor for the M3 is 1 3/4" long. So it is just long enough for that application.

The folks at GTS kindly recommended that I buy one of theirs for the tapered handguards and use something called a hack saw to shorten it down. Who makes this hack saw thing. Is that a Bushmaster product? ARMS? Will it mount on my RAS?[chainsaw]

A hacksaw is a commonly used tool, when adding rails to handguards.[;)]
