I read this article awhile back:

www.defensereview.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=258

However, I have not heard a SINGLE THING about it since then.  I've never even seen anyone post about it on the boards.  Does anyone know anything further about the RROC?  Pictures?  Articles?  Thanks!

RROC never really proven itself. the upper never worked properly as far as reliability.  the system is a piece together setup from SKS and M14 gas system and Davies never had a sucessful demo as far as I know.

Don't believe everything you read.

I don't believe everything I read, but it was intriguing and I was looking for more sources on it.  Do you know what was causing the unreliable function?  Was it the new gas-piston system or all that extra recoil-reducing crap (carrier counter weights, recoil buffers) that was causing the problems?

It was the system.  at an Army test, the gun blow up. at least this is what i heard from a first hand source.  none of the military branches nor the Federal level LE agancy are very impressed with the RROC.

Thank you for the responses and information SMGLee.  Do you (or anyone else) happen to know of any systems that incorporate a gas piston system into the AR-15 that do work?

ZM weapon is the only one I know so far,

I thought the ZM Weapons still blew gas down a tube except it's attached to the bolt carrier?  From what I understand it still blows gas all around inside the upper, just less than a stock AR-15.  Is this correct?

Well if you like the look of the RROC, we all know where you can get the rail system and it will be $150.00 less than a sir!

I have not seen any pictures of it.  What rail system does it use?

The handguard system is the "Predator" If you do a search you will see pictures of the handguards, but unless you are going to attempt to build one yourself, I think the top rail is too high, we are all waiting for the test results to come back anytime.

So the Type 65 uses a gas piston system?  How reliable is the rifle compared to the AR-15?

Y'all forgot the OA97 or something, it hit every branch on the ugly tree but it too uses a piston gas system.
ZM uses the gas piston, and gas still gets blown on the bolt itself.

I think it's the OA-93.  Not only does it look ugly, the rod doesn't look very well protected.  ZM still uses a direct gas inpingement systems as far as I can tell.  It's just that the gas tube is actually connected to the bolt carrier.  A true gas piston system will not blow gas into the receiver, a rod will work the action.

TopCrest has a few thousand rounds through his current generation Gas Piston prototype upper without a problem. Looks like a good yet simple design this time, and he's possibly going into production with it in the future.

Has anyone else had experience with this upper?

You're right, it's not gas piston, ZM just uses a modified gas system but same principle.

Does it still blow gas into the bolt carrier?
Link Posted: 9/11/2003 6:58:23 PM EDT
[#23]
Yes it does.  The bolt is interchangeable with that of a standard AR15, though the charging handle and bolt are not.

[#24]
What's the point of it then?  Does it still get dirty gases all over the upper?  Does it stay in the bolt?

Well for one thing it allows a real folding stock, not a telescoping one.  Seems pretty trivial to me, can't really shoot worth a damn with the stock folded unless you shoot like the SAS does their MP5 with arms fully extended.  It's great when stowed or carried thus folded, it's very short.
A folded ZM with a 14.5" barrel + flash hider is shorter than a retracted 11.5" barrel AR.
