Looking to do whitetail hunting in Texas, (just west of Kerrville) 200 yd max shot dist.
Was thinking of a m&a parts 24" ss bull barrel 1 in 8 twist.
Any advice on this upper, and suggestions on ammo would be greatly appreciated.

It's legal, but I would not recommend it. I shoot does with .223 every year, but they are all head shots. no WAY would I shoot a buck, or a doe for that matter in the boiler room at 200yards. You would have to make a perfect shot to ensure they didn't run a mile before piling up.

I've been wondering about this idea as well.  I was thinking about 75 and 77 grain bullets, which [i]I believe[/i] would mean having to get a 1 in 8 twist on the barrel, right?  If I am wrong, someone set me straight.

What about re-chambering in .243 Win?

Better yet, get an AR-10 in .308. I have one that is a one inch gun at 200 yards.

Nosler makes a 62 grain partition bullet.

My brother shoots his deer in the lungs and has killed 3 with single shots and 50grain nosler balistic tips using a 18inch barreled mini14.

The rifle will kill but you need to put the rounds into vitals (Heart, Lungs, Brain stem) a Liver shot will leave a deer running 500yds and a gut shot will leave it alive for 4 hours to days.


Don't believe everything you hear the .223 is deadly enough for deer. And I don't mean head shots only (I could do that with a .22lr).

[b]Why 24inches? if your only looking for 200yds you could use anything longer than legal for your pourposes-- granted the 24 will do double duty as a varmint gun any day of the week and that barrel will give you lots of veloctity[/b]

I want the most metal for my money (they're all the same price) and I liked the balace best i.e. personaly I like more mass (higher inertia)is harder for me to mess up while aiming and firing.
