The M4 has a Safe-Semi-BURST fire-control group (FCG), while the M4A1 has a Safe-Semi-AUTO FCG. M4A1s are generally only issued to Spec-Ops teams.
The first M4s came with A2 uppers, and a few of those are still around (and will have their upper swapped out for a flattop when they go in for depot maintenance). Also, a small number of M4A1s were retrofitted with a medium-weight barrel, often referred to as a "heavy M4" profile. This was a result of some extended full-auto testing that was WAY beyond abuse (the M4 is NOT a SAW!) that resulted in over-heated, shot-out barrels. Finally, newer M4s are coming with the newer-style (waffle-top) collapsable stock on a 7-position tube. Any other differences are purely done at the individual or unit level. -Troy |
