How the hell do I convince my local gunsmith that he's not breaking the '94 law by putting an FS on my upper.  Someone told him it was illegal and he won't do it.  I think if I take the upper to him again the BATFEtc. will pay me a visit.  There are a couple other local 'smiths but he's the best around here.

Hmmmm..........maybe go to some website that has the laws in pdf form, d/load 'em and take a copy to him?

All I can think of, off the top of my head.

Give him the # of the local/nearest BATF field office & he can get the skinny direct from them.

Find a better gunsmith, one that actually knows the business, instead of one that just runs a "gun machine shop".

Get Kurt Wala of KKF in the industry section to do it.  He does them all the time for a reasonable fee and you would be supporting a member of AR15.com by using him.  He is busy though and you may have to wait a month to get the rifle back.

That's my my main concern, time I don't have it. I've heard nothing but good about Kurt.

What is the FS that you are referring to:

Fake Silencer/ Suppressor

or Flash Hider (Fake)?

I attach them permanently. I currently make Fake Silencers and offer to permanently attach them for customers who have postban or need to bring them up to legal length.

Just thinking like a plumber... but how about you take the upper to him on a pre-ban lower. Then he knows the upper is going on a pre-ban and he can book it in/out so if *someone* ever comes back to ask him, he can show that the work was done to a pre-ban?

I've taken it to him as an upper only.  Maybe I'll take it to him on my SP1 lower, maybe I'll send it to Kurt.

While Kurt's work and reputation are well known here, he's also a busy guy. I have had two Phantoms get the pin/weld/repark from Mike at ORF(me223 on the EE!) generally a 7 day return.

Please excuse my ignorance, but the pin.weld would be due to cutting back to 14.5" for the Phantom making it 16", right?

TIA,

Yes,in my case it was. Pin & weld is one of the BATF accepted "permanent" attaching procedures.

So, if I kept the barrel length at 16" I could keep the threads on it.  In case I wanted to swap out the Phantom for a Vortex, etc.  I appreciate all your help and assistance in all this.

as long as it is going on a preban lower. yeah, keep your threads. if the barrel gets under 16", that is when it gets weird.
