From my own experience, it depends on the ammo. I've found that USGI surplus and most commercial ammo doesn't produce as much flash as you'd expect from a 16 inch barrel. The brightest flash I've ever had was from Guatemalan surplus ammo from JG Sales. This was truly the "three foot flame!" After shooting a rapid string of 30 of these, you notice that the range is very quiet and everyone is staring at you....

Thanks, guys. I'm looking into an AR15, post ban, but can't decide on 16 or 20 inch barrel. Would a flash suppressor really make that much of a difference? In other words, what am I losing by going post ban?

I saw a guy shooting a 20 inch, which I am pretty sure had no flash suppressor, over the weekend at the night shoot and it made a thin flame about 10" long. But then with xm193 my shorty can make basketball size flames. I think ammo makes much more difference than the suppressor. I would not spend the extra money on a preban just to get a flash suppressor (unless you like the appearance enough to spend the extra money).
