Giving this thread a healthy bump.

Decided to assemble this upper from a bunch of parts laying around, from sights to lights, barrel, etc.

Not bad so far. I'm digging the OD theme so much, I decided to order a K2 in OD to replace the black one. Will try to see who's wanting to trade an OD for black stocks in the EE later.

Lol. I’ve got an old SSA sitting on my table that I just went pulled out of rifle that got a SDC. I’ve been staring at it for a few days thinking, what should I build this trigger into.

My first, and therefore my go to.  I am still setting it up, and am headed to the range to zero the irons and red dot this weekend.  Some things may change, but right now, without having fired it, I am happy with it.

Your upper on the last pic looks different than the other two pics.

More importantly, the rear iron sight in pic #2 is backwards.  And too far forward.  Turn it around and bring it back towards the charging handle.

I've seen that done before, almost always by people with impaired vision like older folk and those born that way, wrong prescriptions, etc.

I think it has more to do with the nose to CH using the wider peep because they can't see it anymore instead of moving their heads back. Prior service muscle memory perhaps even?

Nope, that would be my ignorance.  It is as far back as it will go.  I am heading out in a couple hours to the range to sight in the irons, and will sight the red dot this coming week (I am taking all the classes the range has to offer).

The difference in the upper/lower is probably lighting.  I did not buy them separate.

EDIT:  Flipping the rear put it in the correct position over the CH.  When it folds down now, it comes nearly flush to the rear.  Thanks guys!

Mine has changed… here is the current configuration. Everything I hoped and wished it would be. Taking her to get sighted in and out it through the trial paces.

Factory colt socom upper.. sent it to John Thomas for the pinned SF3P, shaved and refinished fsp, and Geissele rail installation. Big props to him by the way.

Aero lower I put together with an SSP, H2 buffer and sprinco blue. Just waiting on my ambi 60 safety and she’s done. Now for my RC2 to come in…

Here is the rifle I just completed to be my new SHTF Rifle to take the place of my 12.5.  It has alot to prove before it takes the spot.  I hope to get some round through her in the next week.  Still need a light. Thinking about Cloud defensive.

Details are Criterion Hyrid 13.9 w/ SFMB p/w.  SOLGW ZF Lower.  RE is A5H2 setup.  Most of the part are FCD.  BCG is SOLGW.  G SSA Trigger,  Chose the Trij 1-4 for durability.  Still may change to an acog.

I finally got a light and optic for my go-to AR (which is also my first one).  I'm still weighing getting an ambi lower for this one and putting a 3-pos. FRT in the current lower to slap on for fun.  Leaning towards the LMT, but I heard that Geissele is coming out with one and I want to see what that looks like before I make a choice (also considering the LWRCI).  Whenever in the future (probably years from now) I get into night vision, additional changes will come, and if I have an established free State address, I also plan on getting an A2-mount suppressor as an accessory (I'm leaning towards the GMT-Halo).  Minor future changes may be a FCD short-throw ambi selector and a Geissele Government charging handle.  The muzzle device and grip are changed when in CA, and the stock locked in place.

Current configuration is:

Upper Assembly:

-Aero Precision No-FA Upper Receiver
-Forward Controls Designs Slickside Bolt Carrier (NP3 finish, serrated)
-LMT Enhanced Bolt
-Daniel Defense 16" Mid-Length Lightweight Profile Barrel (with the GBJ turned down to normal LW spec by ADCO) and gas tube
-Battle Arms Development .625" Titanium Gas Block (pinned in place)
-bayonet lug harvested by ADCO from a Brownell's .625" FSB and taper-pinned in place
-Forward Controls Designs 6315 Flash Suppressor with Colt grenade retainer spring
-LMT BUIS (yards-marked) with Compass Lake .05" NM FSP
-Geissele Mk16 10.5" FF modular handguard
-Geissele NSN Airborne charging handle
-TA-33 ACOG (red horseshoe, 5.56) on Midwest Industries QD mount
-Light is Surefire KM2C head and DS00 tailcap with Arisaka 600 body on Arisaka offset mount
-Modlite Modbutton Lite remote switch with Arson Machine wire keeper
-Arisaka QD swivel mounts (bottom is to use sling as shooting aid, left side for carry/tactical use)
-ALG swivels with BFG VCAS sling

Lower Assembly:

-Aero Precision STS lower receiver and extension
-Geissele SSA-E trigger
-Geissele Maritime bolt catch
-Radian Talon short-throw ambi selector
-Magpul MIAD grip
-LWRCI Compact stock
-Norgon ambi magazine release
-Forward Controls Designs reinforced buffer detent
-LMT winter trigger guard
-LMT QD end plate
-Geissele Super 42 buffer spring with H buffer
-Aero Precision LPK for the rest of the lower parts

Plus with some stabby goodness:

Thanks!  I think a general purpose fighting rifle should be able to take a bayonet, which is why I configured it this way.

It's on the lighter side, too.  It weighs 7 lbs. 14.8 oz. with all accessories pictured other than the bayonet and an empty magazine.

I think it's because people's "go to's" tend to get changed less than their toys.

Also, that bootleg upper looks really good with that mcmr.

Most SHTF scenarios aren't going to be an EOTWAWKI and will be more of a "use what you bring" concept. A standard loadout will more than likely solve most SHTF concepts (riots, civil unrest, natural disaster, unruly mobs, etc) which should be easy enough to stock, even for the exotic or less common calibers.

I dunno man, I consider some changes to be an evolution in the shooter himself whereas his ride or die adapts with him to these changes.

I can tell from that last pic alone it's gotten a few more changes, some function more than form but it is what it is. The switch was moved back a few slots after a night class showed that I was having a weaker thumb placement and not getting good solid contact with it when being used. A suppressor cover was added because damn those things are hot when safety slung. and gnarly to look at but I get it's purpose. Added a flip cover to that Modlite and had to go to another offset mount to get the clearance for that Butler Creek cap to properly function when the 18350 PLHv2 needs to be deployed. That cover solved another problem I wasn't aware about with a potential glare being shown either in the sun or directed light when I don't want to be seen just yet.

I can or could go into detail why every change was done, none of which was to make it purty

There was weight savings that were more than just negligible with that Bootleg upper in conjunction with that BCM MCMR.

I agree with that.  The 2 rifles I would grab, have barely changed (short of a suppressor addition), yet my LPVO SBRs have gone through changes.

Yeah, better lights have hit the market, but my Surefires still work.

I mention the 2, because I have 1 on each floor in case the Russians go Red Dawn whilst I am relaxing downstairs.

In for page 50.

Simple, handy, reliable all-around go-to, when not shooting suppressed.

@vehemence that’s a sweet looking setup. Something about an RDS and fixed irons make me happy.

@MRTEX

Thanks! Here’s an odd ball setup I painted and assembled yesterday. It’s also set up with a fixed rear site (different one) and RDS.

@Hox

Sweet setup BUT, what’s your go-to AR?

Love everything about it. I really wish I liked Eotech sights because that looks perfect.

My Current go to is my 12.5.  My 13.9 earlier on this page was built to become my new go to, but it needs to prove itself to take the spot from my 12.5.  Since I have a LPVO on the 13.9, this one will probably be coming off soon for a Eotech, or a PA micro prism
