I just bought my first AR on Fathers day. It is a Smith and Wesson M&P15 II, since it says 5.56 on the barrel does it matter if I shoot 5.56, 5.56 NATO or .223 rounds out of it. I keep hearing people talk about is your barrel good for both, and that it should be marked on the barrel that way. Thank you for any input on such a simple question.

You're cleared hot for 5.56 or .223.

5.56 and .223 are good to go in a 5.56 chamber.

Only shoot .223 in a .223 chamber (generally).

Clean it, lube it, and go shoot it.

Yep that rifle will likely eat every kind of 5.56 and .223 your wallet can afford, S&W makes a fine weapon.  Avoid the steel cased stuff at first til the rifle wears in a bit. Lube is your friend with the AR as mentioned.

Think of it like 44 special and 44 magnum.  .223 is the 44 special, and 5.56 is 44 magnum.  A 5.56 gun can shoot both (like a 44 mag revolver), but a .223 gun should only shoot .223 (like a 44 special revolver).

And yes,run it well-lubed.  As a friend of mine says, "ARs like to run wet and sloppy."
