Picked up some new Federal XM193F. The case is sort of "staked" around the primer. Presumably this is the prevent primer blow outs which have been a common complaint on this ammo.
Anyone else have this? Am I right in my assumption of why it is done?

It's a factory crimp. swage it out if you are reloading it.
Edit: And yes, you are right. 5.56 ammo is higher pressure than .223, and may cause primer to blow out.

iirc that's 2nd ammo that had the bullets pulled and reloaded

• All XM193 product is the same regardless of the sku or part number. (ie. XM193C is the same as XM193F, XM193CBP and etc…) The only difference is the package configuration.

from Federal's website....

That's not really relevant to factory 2nd ammo, look up XM193PD

Its just New form of primer crimp.

I bought a bunch of this stuff. Noticed the unusual crimp right away. Been through about 500 rounds of it so far. Shoots well, and buying 500 at a time got a pretty good price. Nothing about "training only" on the box. It shows no indication of being reloaded or anything like that. I haven't reloaded any of the empties yet, but I'm betting it will be easier to swage than the fully crimped stuff.

And then use a primer pocket reamer (uniformer) if you want to reload those cases.
Here's one that works with the excellent L.E. Wilson case trimmer system...

That reamer looks good. Unfortunately I have a different case trimmer. The RCBS primer pocket swaging die set only costs thirty something and works quickly and well. At least it has for me. I imagine removing what amounts to a partial crimp on the LC 12 cases will be even easier than the full crimp on the LC 11 cases I've reloaded. Some people use a drill bit to just shave off the crimp. Some people just use a blade of some kind and carve the crimp off. I tried those methods and didn't like the results, so I got the swaging die set.
