From one newbie to another, No AR then just get a colt 6920. That's what I did. Had none, needed one, done deal. Got about 500 rds w/ IS.Runs great.

My first AR15 was a Bushmaster Modular Carbine about 10 years & 8,000 rounds ago. Though it has changed over the years with various modifications, it has only gotten better with age and still is my go to rifle. Everyone that shoots it cant believe its a bushy....I know this rifle through & through. Every bit of work done to it has been achieve with my own hands. So my choice for your first would be the Bushmaster. But I would recommend the standard M4.

Dont waste your money on the rifle with the red dot sight. It is most likely garbage. I would look into pretty much any M4 configuration rifle from a reputable manufacturer. Windham is good. Colt is great. They can be had for about 1000, check here.

If the bushmaster has carbonfiber receiver, definitely no. Unless the reddot coming on a gun is an EOTech, Aimpoint, or even Vortex, it isn't worth it.
The Sig or Wyndham would be better choices. Colts can be had for good deals lately too. |

Another vote for the Colt 6920 here. Worth a few more dollars, IMO. My LGS sells them for $1073.

On a budget, the S&W M&P Sport, hands down. These commonly sell for around $650.

I'll second the vote for the S&W M&P Sport. I have a friend who bought one as his first AR. He loves it and I was very favorably impressed with what you get for only about $650. If you're in the $1000 price range, the Colt is the obvious choice. The Sig seems like a reasonably solid piece of kit too, though, if you can't find a Colt in your area.
Stay away from the carbon Bushmasters. They have a terrible reputation for durability (because of a serious lack thereof). |

Thats cheaper than one I saw in Pigeon Forge, TN ($1093) and London, KY ($1097). Both within the last month and half. I hope it is that the prices are still dropping. I think I might wanna grab one of those with the M4 Carbine markings. Mine has the LEO Restricted markings on it. |

I have a DPMS A2 HBAR I traded for to be able to shoot with my son who has a S&W 15T, the S&W Sport is a great rifle for the price and the quality is top of the line S&W. The Sport has a melinite 5R barrel and is very accurate.

Another vote for the S&W Sport. It's a great way to get started without spending a lot of money and still have a quality rifle.
You're going to get a lot of Colt fanboys that are going to say "Just buy a Colt" BCM makes a good quality AR, and so does Daniel Defense. Noveske is considered to be a top-tier company in terms of quality but they are also much more expensive. A lot of it will depend on how much you are willing to spend. |

+1 on the Colt at Wal-mart. I know, I know its Wal-mart but it is still a Colt and no wait for it to ship. What is your price range?
[edit] I'm not saying buy a Colt because its a Colt (sounds that way though  ) but because it is available at a decent price. I could also recommend Rock River Arms. I know there are haters out there but I have an A2 that is a really nice shooter.

I would strongly recommend the Spikes mid length from Aim Surplus for $770. I am pretty sure that is the best deal going right now. Use the notify when in and buy it quickly.

Of the three you named, I'd pick the M400. Not even close for me. Of the three, the Bushmaster is also easily a no-go for me.
If you are prepared to look outside the three, the Colt is a very good suggestion, 6720 or 6920. |

OP, isn't it great that you narrow down your choice to 3 rifles and you get 20 different brands suggested? The Windham is good to go. Their customer service has been talked about on a couple of threads here also.
If you can find it, there is a thread about a Windham owner who lost a detent spring changing out a part. He called them to order another spring, and they sent it to him free of charge. I know it wasn't an expensive part, but they took care of him when it wasn't their obligation to and that is worth it's weight in confidence. Check their industry website here and look at all the happy owners. |
