Not being sarcastic, but why would you want to see this? Does not make any sense to me as to what you are trying to accomplish other than people posting a bunch of pictures of worn bolts. I am a bit confused, after shooting these rifles of various configurations for the past 34+ yrs or so wear on the bolt tail is irrelevant. Clean it up, replace gas rings when needed, keep on shooting. If it gets pitted or causes other problems, replace it. Bolts aren't that expensive for that matter. Just giving my opinion on the matter.

Just giving my opinion on the matter. Curiosity. I see people talk about pitting all the time but doing a pretty extensive google search has netted me almost zero pictures of pitted bolts. Absolutely none of pits on the far back part of the tail (a few with some pitting near the rings). I'm curious if, especially on high round count bolts, pitting ever really occurs. Also, what it looks like. My bolt has some "unevenness" on the tail, which I have read can be attributed to be artifacts of the shot-peening process that have shown up after the finish has worn away from use. Not a real point to a lot of threads on this board.  I would rather not deal with anecdotes. Let's see pics. |

Any issue of a technical nature seems like it has validity here. Even if perchance there was no observable difference between bolts of 500 and 50,000 round counts, that alone would be interesting.

I have had a bolt that was pitted before.
I blame myself for not cleaning and letting the carbon build up causing rust, the rust pitted the steel. I have never seen rust on the tails, I think the carrier keeps that part clean. I'll post pics soon. |

Why isnt there a picture thread with some detailed documentation of some nice worn in m4's and 16's from Iraq n A-stan.

I work as a contract armorer at a major mobilization center for the ARNG. I've seen some pitiful shape M4's come back from overseas that look like they were rode very hard and put up very dry....dry as in no lube on them before they were put in conex's, made the trip across the water, then make it to us. Usually rust has started forming by then. This is caused by the mentality that "I'm coming home and don't give a shit" attitude. From what I hear, units have a chance if they come thru Kuwait processing out to at least give the wpns a quick general cleaning...run it thru the cleaning vats, dry them off, put on a good coat of CLP and rack em up. Hell of a way to treat something that you've carried day in and day out that might have saved your life or someone else's. I have seen pitted bolts like in this picture....maybe 3 in the last 3 yrs, about 12K M4's/A2/A3/A4 rifles have come thru our shop, give or take a few hundred. Probably caused by not properly cleaning or getting the chance to clean on a regular basis, and letting the carbon sit and bake onto the steel, layer on layer. |

I don't have 5000rds as of yet, but should be somewhere around 3000 if you would like me to post a pic I will. Course I think mines in pretty good shape, cause' I'm a little anal about cleaning. |

Great thread.
Intuitively, I am about to suggest that a pitted tail might have some advantages as it allows the part to be loaded with grease which may then be self-applying. I'm just tossing this out... |

Keeping this thread alive. Here's my bolt tail. (The reason the tail looks unlubed while the rest has a ton of lube is cuz I wiped it for the pic. The lube reflected too much light heh)

Foursixty, if you saw what I see on a regular basis, you'd understand what I am talking about. The wpns are given a reql quick dip in the vats and that's about it. Usually, wpns make it back here in about 2 weeks or so after the unit makes it home. By then, plenty of things are happening due to not enough or no CLP or any kind of lube on the outside whatsoever. It can ruin a weapon real quick. I've been overseas as well, and want to get home ASAP myself. But some of it is just uncalled for. Saw a bunch of it today on some M240B machineguns, and I've seen it on new M240L mg's too. But, there was a time not too long ago some units were in Kuwait waiting to board the plane to come home. Guess what? They got extended for 4 more months, and they had to unpack all of their stuff, break it down, and re-issue it out, including weapons. They got cleaned real quick from what I remember. Just my thoughts. |

the pic below is not mine...found it on another forum. This bolt comes from a Norinco CQ311 (the M16A1 ugly clone) with less than 2K rounds according to the owner...
