I am an LEO and am looking to buy an AR, I live in NJ, which is a shitty state with a lot of laws, but would be the best option for me to purchase an m4, i.e. brand and model number.  Please respond asap please time is off the essence.

You could get full auto on a letter head if you so chose.  IMHI go with COLT  or Daniel defense.  I cant tell what model number becuase I dont have enough info on what you want exactly.  But those brands have great quality.

Honestly there are so many options. It really depends on what you want?

If you are looking for great reliability and a fair price then a Colt/Bushmaster/S&W M&P will do you well all for less then $1,000.
Everyone might jump in and say DD, or Bravo, etc etc. Frankly main concerns are a quality bolt and carrier. So just ensure that what ever AR you buy
the Gas Key is well staked and so is the castle nut. The key is to practice with it and make sure the rifle you do purchase is reliable and if once you get a few hundred rounds down range throw it in the cruiser and hopefully you will never have to use it.

Other then that don't fall for the hype..

I have been hearing great things about these PSA rifles. Cant go wrong FN Hammer forged barrel and well put together rifle. Price is right. I have one of there bolt carriers assemblies and it's top knotch.
Check out this link.

Whats your budget?
Will it be used for Work?

Colt, BCM, Daniel Defense, LMT, Larue, Noveske, ect... are all great, but prices vary

Didn't give a bunch of info... This is a patrol rifle? What if any are your departments restrictions on brands/features etc?

I'm going skip all the go fast stuff, and all of the normal things I recommend for rifles and just give you a rec that will be "good enough" because I don't know what you can and can't have.

Colt 6920 + whatever restrictions you have to have for your laws.

With a bit more info on what you what/need/can have I would probably rec something different.

Build/assemble it yourself.

Don't be like me and spend @$1000 on an assembled rifle just to change out $300-400 worth of parts later.

Noveske, larue, or knights armament. Don't know the laws with what you can and can't have but these are what I consider to be the best.

For the money my #1 is a Daniel Defense DDM4.  I own a hybrid rifle that I built and love but I was very impressed with the DDM4.  My second choice would be a Colt 6920 but I honestly prefer the DDM4 over the 6920.  If you want a really great weapon system and you are not concerned about the price whatsoever I would look into the VLTOR TS3...its badass.  If you are looking at a piston driven AR I would go with the LWRC M6A2.

the 6400C is hands down the best off the shelf NJ compliant AR on the market... I bought mine during the ban for $850

This is worth repeating. First find out what, if any, restrictions your Dept may have and it may help narrow down you choices. I would personally go with the following in no particular order.

Colt
LMT
Bravo company
Daniel Defense
Knights Armament
Noveske
Spikes Tactical

Check out Narc45ACP ... He has the same NJ issue you do...

My top 3 would be Knights Armament, Spikes tactical, and LaRue Tactical. Not necessarily in the order.

LaRue Tactical
Colt
LMT
Bravo company
Daniel Defense
Knights Armament
Noveske
Spikes Tactical
Bushmaster (mine is flawless)
Smith & Wesson
POF USA
DPMS
CMMG....

All are great guns.  All guns can malfunction.  Some have a better track history than others.  Some are pure hype and the hype goes both ways.  Its all about buying the right magazines and parts that make them function more flawlessly.  Most of those in my list come with the goodies you need.

A better question would be..which ones not to buy.

LMT Defender 2000 Lower

Sopmod stock

Upper: LMT - 14.5 Basic

Centurion Arms C4 Rail System - Carbine Cutout

I suggest getting it from Rainier Arms with your LEO discount and have them do any pinning you might need.

(If you buy your rifle in component form....separate purchases of upper & lower you get a little price break too)

Budget, intended use, desired features, required features, etc... These are all things that will greatly play into what you want and who to get it from. Any of the mentioned companies and more, can potentially provide you with a reliable rifle(or the desired components if you build it yourself), but some maybe more likely than others. I, and anyone seriously trying to help you get what you need/want, would need to know these specifics before giving you a specific recommendation. I'd love to send you straight to a link and say "buy this", but I can't in good conscious without knowing more.

What's all this talk about NJ compliance? I was under the impression that LEO could have any banned feature they wanted. Is that something that would vary from state to state?

Individual LEO is held to same standard as his civ counterpart. Agency purchase is another story.
