I just recently inherited an AR-15 and was wanting to know more about it.  I was referred to this site to find out more answers and was hoping that someone here would know more about this gun that I do.  I didn't want to do anything to the gun without first finding out everything I could about it.  Thanks for any and all info you might have.

The barrel has the following stampings:
c MP 5.56 NATO 1/7

The Lower says
Colt
Match
Target TM
lightweight tm
CAL. 223
Ser. CSL 002*** (yes, there are only 5 numbers in the serial #)

Rear iron sight

Can anyone tell me what the 8/3 on the elevation wheel on the rear iron site means? (or any of the numbers for that matter)  [Much thanks to Gatorhunt for info on the rear sight]

Also, can anyone tell me what this gun is worth?

Thanks

EDIT: number correction, thanks to Gatorhunt, and question of gun value.

Looks like you got an early MT6530 with the sear block (converted M16 FCG to civilian use) but there are many many members here with way more knowledge than I .. also you can call Colt and they can tell you when it was manufactured and probably a few other things about it.

The numbers on the site adjustment wheel are 8/3 ... not 5/8 ... it stands for 800meters and 300meters. Here is a useful site that I learned from and also this

Its a standard A2 carbine late model from probably the early 90s,has the larger .170 FCG pins and parts and the stock was added later as the castle type nut was not around then and from the view you show would have been factory staked.I wouldnt pay no more than $700 unless its all factory wich by the stocks nut it looks like it was added on later. If Its not all original factory  it looses value in that respect.I know light weights came with govt barrels on full size rifles and yours looks like an HBAR carbine barrel so it may not even be in its original configuration..call Colt with the serial# theyll tell you how it left the factory.

What do you mean by factory staked? What does the lightweight designation mean?  Thanks for helping a newbie to undeerstand.

Castle nut staking looks like this ... Colt does this on their carbines with adjustable stocks.

Its just on your rifle for the year it was possibly made seeing as how its grey and has the steel block it shouldnt have that type of nut leading me to believe it was not factory done plus no staking like Gator shows.I had a 6601 match target HBAR and the lightweight marked lowers on  carbines and rifles I saw had 16" pencil barrels no lug and fixed A2 stock while full size rifles had no lugs with govt profile barrel 20" barrel in 1/7.If yours was a factory govt carbine most likely it would have had a lighter barrel and type 1 stock and earlier nut plus 2 posistion open/close.

Even the lower receiver extension or buffer tube looks more black than it should be for that time period.Pull off the bottom handguard there should be a date on the bottom of the barrel up near the end cap toward the front that should at least give you a barrel date.If its a 2 screw front than that lower should be aerly 90s like 92 later ones had a srew left  side  but was captive after removing the srew like a normal push pin.

The castle nut doesnt mean anything because 6530s left the factory with a A2 stock.

Im using the example of the unstaked current castle nut as proof its not a factory gun.

You may also want to post this in the " Industry" section and under the subtitle " Colt" .
I also think the barrel may have been swapped as a HBar doesn't go on a " light weight " rifle, but at least they used a quality Colt barrel. I would also check your Bolt and Carrier for the proper Colt markings. These can be found in the Colt section.
I would say in my parts that Rifle would go for $800 to someone with knowledge and up to a grand for those who don't.  I bet it is a sweeet shooter, give it a try. You may just like the Colt Koolaid.

Edit, actually I am not 100% sure you have a HBar as your photo doesn't show the entire barrel.

Here are more pics, and I did post this in the industry section as well.  Thanks

BTW, the upper has C  MB stamped on it.
Barrel is not threaded.    I am gonna call Colt tomorrow to find out how the gun left the factory so that I can tell exactly which parts were swapped out on it.

One of my first AR's was a frankenrifle that was setup almost exactly like that but it was an A1 ... it was an awesome shooter and really accurate with irons ... kind of regret selling it.

thet's an early MT6530 with the A2 fixed stock replaced by a carbine stock.
a friend of mine has one like that.
they went out of production in 1999/2000 if I'm not mistaken

Did they make Govt. Profile barrels for the Match Target? My HBAR barrel says "C MP 5.56 NATA 1/7 HBAR" on the barrel. It is on a R6600K though, just using it as a HBAR reference.

Yes, the MT 6551.

I wonder if that is what the OP's barrel is then, since it does not say HBAR on the barrel.

d4klutz, is the barrel skinny under the hand guards?

MT6530

It is a 16" light weight barrel. It looks thicker because of the lack of a FH. He basically has a neutered RO6520.

Thanks to all for their replies.   This is the BCG from the above rifle.

Would it hurt the value of the rifle to have the barrel threaded and a FH added?

That is the correct carrier.
The value may be more.

If that's the original BCG (and it sure looks like its all Colt) it hardly looks like it's been shot at all. Your not going to hurt the value any but I would leave it just like it is ... I bet she shoots really nice groups with those iron sites.

hey,

welcome to the site, and nice Colt. Don't know if your already into shooting or just new to the ar platform or both, but if you want the best advice anyone could ever give you here or anywhere... Never ever sell your first gun! and if its not your first, never sell your first ar! its only a matter of time until you regret it.
