Depends what kind of steel, and what 5.56 round. M855 will cut through 1/2 rebar for example.

will steel ricochet at all? if so, what is a safe distance to place it at? |

I would normally not say its safe under 50 yards. That said you could shoot hundreds of rounds at close range and not have an issue. You realy MUST wear eye protection though. Small fragemnts will come back at you... not entire bullets. Not a big deal to have you hit your arm or leg but you dont want one in the eye. |

1/4" thick armorgard will stop 5.56.
There's several factors involved. 5.56 M193 ball ammo does the most gong damage of the common calibers. M855 is a little easier on the gongs, and .308 ball is like a pistol round. I have a bunch of AR450 gongs that were given to me, and .223/5.56 craters them up pretty good. .308 splatters off of them like a .45acp round. They're over 1/2" thick so they still last very long, but they are rough on the surface. My AR500 gongs are 3/8 inch thick and they have minor pocking from M193, but hold up to rifle much better than AR450. .223 will pass through 1/4" mild steel like butter and will throw jacket material back at the shooter. I wouldn't shoot anything under AR450 inside of 100 yards. |

A steel joint that supplies a rock crushing operation would have this. In Phoenix here, we have Heflin Steel who makes Armorgard. You can order individual gongs from various steel target companies around the US as well. MGM targets or someone maybe.
I get my AR450 free from a guy. They are cut from the leading edge of the bucket on the front end loaders used at a rock crushing joint. I hang mine off of those real estate a frame sign things. They are cheap and fold up quick. |

Aw hell, I'll do it for you. 
I found a set of 3/8" AR500 gongs on ebay using the same search terms. They work great. No complaints. |

Never said the application was for a "target". If you just need to be able to stop 5.56 then 1/4" armorgard is plenty. 1/4" will take plenty of strikes for defensive armor, 3/8" makes for a better target. |

Sorry. AR500 is still what you want. My brother in law works in the steel industry. One of his vendors suggested T1 as an even better, but more expensive, option. I don't know about that, but thought I'd pass it along.

Any idea how USS T-1 holds up?
It is pretty easy to come by. I have fabricated with it extensively. Tensil is in excess of 100 KSI IIRCC. Never have shot at it.... |

Ceramic armor is not that expensive and doesnt weigh what steel does.
