Pannels protect better and have the feel of a regular HG. Ladders work but to me just lack feel.

Why should looks matter? I'd say it's all about function. Whichever WORKS best for your rifle.

Felt some ladders that felt mighty nice the other day. I think they look good too. Kind of a bummer to pay all that money for a quad rail, use 3 inches of rail, then cover the rest up with overpriced rubber pieces. But alas, these are ARs we're talking about.

I like mine naked. No grip or rail panels. All rail. My hands grip my vertical foregrip.

All the cool kids use VFG + ladders.
The US Army uses panels. Therefore, I use both. Makes no real difference. |

I like the low-profile "ladder-covers" on the side rails and the C-Products "semi-rounded" slide-on rail guard at 6-o'clock. For me this provides a nice slim foregrip with a nice feel/fit in the palm of my forward hand. So my answer is - a combination of both, YMMV.

Lowest cost (not buying covers) + you can "cheese-grate" your enemy's face should you have to go hand-to-hand as bayonets are out of style. I have hands like leather (no tit-groping for me) and the rail-teeth give me a nice secure grip. |

i use ladders.
uncle sugar saw fit to issue me a rifle that had panels so that's what i used and it was fine. now that i don't "use" a weapon for my job things are different. for the most part i shoot with gloves on so the added heat protection from panels isn't as much of a concern. the lower profile grip fits my hands better and looks good too. at the range or out hunting small critters the gloves offer protection from more than just heat. in a HD situation if i need to fire off enough rounds that the weapon gets too hot to hold then i'm screwed in more ways than one. let's face it, looks play a part in things too. i don't NEED anything more than a basic M4 for HD/SHTF but having a more capable rifle increases my effectiveness. when i add these things to my rifle there is the added bonus of having them be visually appealing (to me). YES, it's a tool blah, blah, blah. i don't NEED 7 hammers just like i don't NEED 7 AR's. some of what we do IS about looks. how many people complain about the purple colt's? would i care? yes and no. it's a colt so in theory it's fine, even if it's purple. the color would bother me and i would end up painting it. so for ME ladders WORK better (should be the primary concern) but also look good

A buddie of mine uses the ladders and I shot his gun a couple of times......I didnt like the feel. When I purchased my quad rail I went with the Knight RAS with the panels of different lengths. It was mentioned earlier that they feel like the original forward handguard and that I like.
For me it's definately rail covers!!!

I bought both! I have the magpul rail covers and xtms and like the xtms better. They offer better protection for the rails, feel more sturdy when gripping, are more rugged and I think they look better. Try both and see which feels better for you

I have both. On my gun with a vfg I use ladders. On the my gun without I use the Magpul XTM panels...

I run two short pieces of ladder. I put most of my hand under the rail with my pinky and ring finger up against the VFG and my thumb along the left side of the rail in line with the bore. So I have a short piece of ladder at 6 o'clock in front of the VFG and another piece at 9 o'clock for my thumb/palm. The rest of my rail is naked.

I use panels. One rifle has Tango Down panels and the other has XTM's. I had ladders but it made the rail feel to "square". I also like the way the panels look better. Anyone who says they don't care how there rig looks is full of shit.

I use mostly Magpul XTM rail panels for my carbine shown and also my other midlength carbine, but I also use a few ladder rail covers for small unprotected areas. XTM panels have low profile and I prefer it over ladder covers for extra damage protection, the ladder covers only gives minimum protection and I don't do it for looks. |

I have both. I like the feel of the panel covers, they feel more like normal handguards. But, I really like the look of the ladder covers. The ladder covers do lessen the overall thickness and keep a lower profile. Plus, they keep the rail look. I like the way rails look. Now I use only ladder covers. They are also cuttable so you can size them easier.
