Driving feeding cows this weekend, looked up towards my house and there was a coyote that just crossed the road into a grass field behind my house about 100 yards!! I put the pedal to floor and ran him until i came to a fence, slung open the door, grabbed my trusty R-15, put the crosshairs on him and BOOM!!! He looked at me over his shoulder, so i went BOOM!!! again. Over the hill he went laughing at me.
Then, an hour later 5 miles away, Had a yote laying on a terrace sunning in a grass field just looking at me. i slowed the pickup (i was feeding cows), pulled out the "trusty" R-15, put the crosshairs right between his eyes, BOOM!!! Off he runs! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! and over the hill he goes, Laughing at me the whole way. I went home that evening pissed off Thought i had it sighted in a month age, was hitting clay pigeon targets at 100 yards. havent shot it since, has just sat in my room, so i went to a pond damn dam in my pasture, set up a shoot-n-see target 100 yards away, shot, 2 inches Low and 8 inches Left. shot 2 Low And 7 Left. Shot 2 high AND 7 LEFT!! moved the turrets FOUR CLICKS EACH, shot 8 HIGH AND 2 RIGHT!! shot 6 HIGH and 2 right . shot 6 HIGH and 3 right. ect ect ect ect... Finallly Got a 5 shot group hitting about 1 inch high at 100 yards.. I swear either i am an idiot, dont know how to sight in a gun or there is something wrong with the gun, scope, mount, ammo, or something. I am usually based up pretty good on the window of the door of my pickup or a harris bi-pod sitting on the ground, veryy little if any movement. i 'squeeze' the trigger, not jerk. I am using a Nikon 3-9x40 Buckmasters scope on a LaRue SPR Mount. I am using BlackHills 55gr (? i think) ammo. I clean my rifle after usually after 50 rounds. . Any thoughts, suggestions, rude or vulgar comments? seriously anything will help. |

If it was laughing at you, it wasn't a coyote.
It was a hyena. |
|
check the ballistics on your ammo...how far away was he? you'll be hitting high any closer than 100 yards.
you could try bump-shooting him. that spreads 'em out pretty good. |
|
You know coyote's are smarter than people think. They do in fact know how to pick front door locks, sneak around peoples houses, mess with windage knobs, and loosen scope rings.
He won't be laughing when he comes back and hears that BOOM for the last time |
|
Sounds like something is loose... I'd check the sights and mounts.

What type of optic and what type of mount? Nikon Buckmasters 3-9x40 on a LaRue SPR mount. somebody didnt read the story at the beginning |

Sounds like something is loose on the mts/rings. How windy was it when you sighted the rifle in a month ago?

Does not matter what scope or mount it is, something is loose with one of the two.
You can have a $1000 scope and $200 rings, they can and will come loose if not properly set up. Seen it happen dozens of times. It's either that, or you just plain don't know how to shoot straight. |
|
Sounds like a classic case of Buck fever. But just to be sure you better send me your r-15 just so I can check and make sure.

thinking of posting a pic of the "set-up"? any objections to that?

I won't laugh at you. or think you are a loser. In I've screwed up more perfect shots at deer in my life than most people will ever get a chance to take. Hours and hours at the range. 5 shots in the area of a quarter, deer comes along and I miss it at about 75 yards. Broken scopes, loose rings, shaky hands, pounding heart and even dead calm nerves with a perfectly sighted rifle that I checked out the next day. At least you know it was the rifle and not you.
load her up and try again. As I told an officer who who asked why I was so satisfied with 38 out of 40 on the rifle range. " I'm a big guy, I'll carry a couple extra magazines" |

The funny thing about the "Buck Fever" scenario is two weeks ago me and my brother were feeding cows, spotted a coyote about 200 yards out, grabbed his Remington 22-250, shot and killed it, and be dammed if the country came alive with coyotes! Shot and killed another one about 150 yards out then noticed something out of the corner of my eye and another coyote was down by the creek looking opposite way! shot and killed him about 150 yards away. Gave one last shot at the other two as they were running across our wheat field abotu 400 yards out. Killed 3 of the 5 with shooting only 4 times. So ya, i am pretty confident in my shooting. We've bagged a total of 13 coyotes since November 15th. None with my new Remington R-15 though, didn't get it until after Christmas. |

I don't know what the R-15 twist rate is but I am guessing it is 1/9. If I were you I would try some different ammo.
I know a lot of people swear by black hills, but it could be the ammo...some guns are picky. I reload my own and each gun likes a little something different. I did vote though that you don't know how to shoot! my 16" SPR took a coyote in december at 350 with a head shot while I rested it on a big round bale! 55 grain hornady V-max bullets do not leave much on the backside of the skull... |

The way it sounded from your original post, you chasing it down, seems like you had quite the rush to get up to it. When you are pumping with adrenaline even simple shots get really hard.
It makes since that after a chase, a simple shot would be a bit harder to make. |

sorry about the "safe/fire" pic. i know thats not really arfcom style. my bad.
|

Star at the beginning. Sight in at 25 yards after the scope and rings are removed and replaced. Use locktite, use plenty.
OK- so the locktite has set overnight and is good and stable. Set up on 25 yards. When you get that on, walk it out to 50, 75 and 100. Put it back in the safe. Wait a few days and try it again at 100. If it isn't where it was, I'd say the scope has issues. |

Gave the LaRue mount a once through with the torque wrench and everything was tight. going to give the scope another chance with some different ammo this friday. so unitl then, i dunno.,...

With the temps goin up and down like a yoyo here in OK I can't help but think maybe that has something to do with the POI change. If possible check it out on varying tempature days and see if it's having a repeatable effect.

First off:
A big hearty well done for coming here and detailing out your shots. It is a breath of fresh air to find someone NOT claim to be the main bad guy from Day of the Jackal. Second off: I'm not a glass man so I can't help you with that part (others above seem to have some good advice). You grabbed your rifle and sent some lead when lead needed to be sent. Good enough for this old codger. |

But that was honestly my first two yotes i've tried with this gun. my expectations were through the roof jsut by the way it looks, u know. but i didn't know if anybody on here had suggestions. thanks for the comment tho! |

What about the inside of the scope is there something loose inside maybe broken????????

From what I hear is you have double checked your mount and its solid. To check your scope out you should do a box test at 100 yards. Use one of those 1inch squares targets. Once you get it zeroed move 16 clicks right and fire 5 rds (aim at the center.) than 16 clicks up fire 5,16 clicks left fire five, and 16 clicks down fire five. This should leave you with 5 shot groups at the corners of a 4 inch squre (assuming 1/4 moa clicks) or an 8 inch square (with 1/2 mao clicks.) This test should also be able to asses your accuracy under no stress conditions. If all is well it is not your equipment. The next thing I would check is how your cheek weld is effecting the shot. Try shooting from some different positions like maybe bipod the gun on your truck hood and lean against the side. On scopes with no adjustable parallax different head position can cause problems. If this isn't the problem than you've got buck fever which I would put my money on. The cure is easy, you just have to compete. Enter some local shooting competitions. Experience shooting shots that matter will clear it up real quick.

I do like to hunt but have never really liked the idea of killin something just for sport, for the sake of killin.S so i'm kinda glka u missed. sorry!
|
|
sport? i challenge you to find a farmer, youre in IL, shouldnt be too hard :), that DIDNT want the neighborhood yote population eradicated. they are vermin as far as most are concerned. we may shoot the worthless mangebags for personal enjoyment, but it is secondary to helping keep pests out of farmers' crops, chickens, sheep etc
secondly, theres no tony stewart option, so i didnt vote. wth??? thirdy, got a different scope? if so, try that one, i have had a scope malfunction before, wouldnt hold zero for crap. almost same deal as what youre talking about. |

Sorry to disagree but ya I do get my rocks off to shooting these little ba$tards but it serves a higher purpose. We have 600 head of mama cows and about half calve in the fall and half in the spring. We lose 20 or maybe more calves to coyotes and wild dogs every year. 20 multiplied by the market price $700 = $14,000 just because people don't want to shoot a "poor little innocent" coyote. Well my friend in times like these a $20 box of .223 to save a a few thousands dollars? makes sense to me. |

Wormydog,
First off don't listen to the ninny's that don't understand the need for varmint eradication, let them live in their disney-esq fantasy. Second I think you need to check out that scope - do the box test as someone else has suggested. If there is a problem (and I suspect there it) it will probably show up in the test. Then get the glass fixed. |
|
will do. i really wont have time until friday afternoon. but i found a gun vice thingy in my garage so i am going to try that out. might be kinda hard to use it on an AR style rifle tho
|
|
I've had issues with Nikon scopes before - it wouldn't surprise me if yours wasn't holding its adjustments.
Also, next time you shoot at a coyote, pick a target larger than the head - at least that way you've got some margin for error if your rifle is off a bit. |

I grew up on a dairy farm in Iowa (my grandfathers) and we never lost a single calf to coyote's, even though we could hear them everynight. As a mater of fact I never knew anyone who did. But if you are than by all means blast away. I'm not a "Ninny" I Just respect life thats all. I've never killed an animal and not eatin it, including a Black Bear.
Im probilbly not totally up to speed on what kind of damage they are doing but have seen male/female pairs of them while deer hunting and enjoy watching thier grace and the sense of wild that they put in our timber. To each His own. If you want to kill em all have at it. And iI'm still glad he missed |
|
Well thats good to hear, good for you.if u dont believe me and think i am just a heartless redneck that kills everything i see, then you are half right. but it is a fact that coyotes can be a problem to cattle ranchers. also wild dogs, ie. pitbulls. shot one of those last week as he was knawing on a dead calf he killed less than an hour earlier. If you have never heard of coyotes killing calves than i guess there must be plenty of other food sorces available in your area and they don't need to kill larger game. witnessed three dogs kill a doe when i was deer hunting once. only had my black powder so waited until they chased her across the creek, walked to my pickup got my Bushmaster, followed which way they went, and killed two of them while they were eating the carcass. So ya it is a problem.
|
|
Hey, if thats the case then shoot all the coyote's you need to. I'm city P.D. now and no longer live on the Farm. I just see all the shitty things people do to one another and I think its made me a little softer towards the little four legged guys that don't get to make the same choices we all do. And I'm off to work now.....I kinda wanted to post it to get somebody's blood flowin anyway....
Good Luck! |

Thats respectable. Thanks for serving others (PD). Good luck
