Now that I think of it, these two are the longest serving military rifles. 33 years for the '03 if I remember right.

For some reason, that reminds me of the book: Musket to M14.  I loved that book as a kid, and a good copy is near the top of my wish list.

Back then, however, they thought we'd be using laser beam type stuff by now.

is that a low number 03 or is it safe to shoot?

It's a Rock Island 294xxx so it's safe to shoot, and it does that quite well

There is nothing like those classics. In 10 to 15 years everyone will hold the next big gun.

I love my 03A3.  Wonderfully accurate, great trigger, perfectly comfortable to shoot.  Hurls that 150 grain .30 cal bullet with authority, with a smooth action.

And it's all stock, just as received from the CMP, minus some cosmoline.

I have a dream... that one day we will do away with gunpowder. How about a
lithium-ion battery operated magnetic projectile launcher. But please, no
hybrid rifle!

Also their shields. And that 1903 could still be deadly effective on today's battlefields in the right hands.

Agreed , like in the reincarnated hands of a certain corporal from Tennessee named York?
