I'm looking at a CMMG upper a friend has and the barrel is marked

"CMMG 5.56 NATO WASP 1:9"

He says it has the WASP finish. What exactly is WASP finish ??

Also can someone please define the difference between carbine length gas systems and mid-length gas systems?

Thanks in advance.

CMMG's secret proprietary finish they won't tell you a thing about. Try looking in their Industry forum, there is a post or two about it there.

I have the same upper and a lower from CMMG. What I've been told and other forums confirm is that "WASP" is a treatment that is supposed to stand up better than Chrome or anything else out there at this point. I don't have any proff to the pudding but everything I have read suggests that no long term trials have taken place but that it has held up in a salt water blast much longer that Chrome Moly. If you looked at the upper I'm sure you noticed its fine overall craftsmanship and great lines as well as how everything is nice and tight. At least it is on mine. I am just finishing my final product and will post performance with multiple types of Ammo as soon as I get it on the range. Form the other post I'm not sure what to expect from the company however I did email them directly for more info a day ago and hope to hear back.

CMMG proprietary finish is supposed to be as good or better than chrome lining. I had one for about a month, but a guy was offering quite a bit more than what I had in it so I let it go.
