New to the AR game, I  am trying to create a good dual purpose rifle, what do you think of the mock up here?  Both units fit my eye perfect, the scope is a 10x40, other is a 42mm red dot.

Just rying something outside of the box, the red-dot can be raised in the back to get a 50 yr center, beyond that...scope.  Looks diffeerent, but serves the purpose and I have to shoot it.

All you need now is a good light on top of the red-dot and your good to go.

Seriously......one or the other....if it were me, put the red dot right to the receiver, drop on some front and rear BUIS, cowitness, dial in......done.

The current setup is clumsy......sorry.

I think you need a NV scope between the red dot and the scope. from here, add a tactical light and an IR light stacked up. and you might wanna put on some door jam feelers so you dont hit the door on the way thru.

Seriously tho, If you want a dual purpose rifle, go with a co-witness setup. another alternative is to go with a trijicon with a chevron reticle and maybe stack a small eotech on top of it.

another alternative is to get a 45* rail and mount the red dot on the side so you cant your rifle to shoot close range.

Maybe you could mount a BUIS up top......

I'd sell both and get a nice EOTech or Aimpoint.  You've got an M4gery there, so you're obviously content on short range hunting, plinking or self defense.  If you like the scope and the obvious magnification, get another upper to satisfy your longer range shooting needs.

I see what you're trying to accomplish, but sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and ditch the "every purpose" mentality.  I would spend some dime making that particular rifle worthy of CQB.

I tried out that same $20 red dot on a 10/22.  It lasted a couple outings, but then it turded out.  Ditch the red dot and stick with the scope.  You may as well just point and shoot versus mounting that POS on top of the scope.

Just trying some things, I've already pulled the red-dot, put it on my hi-point 9mm.  I figure if you don't try things and ask questions, how will you ever learn?

Man, you really are cruisin' for a bruisin'...

Just keep the scope, keep it tight, and shoot the crap out of that thing.

seems like you just need:
1) an acog
2) a short dot 1-5x
3) or a very small holo sight up top rather than that fugly thing.

Given my rifle is going through an identity crisis (16" carbinew quad rail, vfg, tac sling, 3-9x) but that is just horrid.

I apologize if i hurt your rifle's feelings, i'm just brutally honest sometimes.

Dont listen to them. Hipoint is a fine firearm for the price.

I have one myself.

take it out at the range when no one is around and shoot occationally.

If you'd have been here for long enough you'd realize that it's never "right".  Plus it almost always requires more than one AR.

Definitely dual purpose, and different, but man does it look terrible.

A J-point would work fine where he had the red dot.  Can't fault him for trying.

Hey no big deal here, I'll take the punishment.  Funny thing it was just a mock up and actually would work, just a bit much.  But you know I ask for it...went back to just the scope.  As for the hi-point, I can shoot all day long at $6.50 for 50 rounds.  Hopefully going to get out to the range with my scope only Stag this weekend and will post the pics.  Have fun shooting to all.

Hey Golfnut....we learn through trial & error, at least most of us. When I bought my first AR15 i probably should have spent lots of time doing lots of research and then spent several thousands of dollars so that my rifle had all the favorite accessories that everyone here seems to hoard.

Of course I didnt, I asked a few basic questions and then went out and bought a plain jane basic A2 Colt HBAR....and I was happy.

I would suggest building one complete rifle for each different purpose.
If it takes longer (becuase it takes more money) so be it..you will be glad you did it right.

A nice 24" with a scope to reach out.....a standard 16" KISS rifle.....an M4 profile with a red dot or ACOG.

Dont get hung up on the accessories and what they look like.
Looks arent the point.

Is your rifle ergonomic?
Does it perform the task at hand?
Is it RELIABLE!!!???

These are the questions that matter.
Get those nailed and then worry about cosmetics.

Welcome to the site....it can be a tough crowd
We were all there at one point.

You can have both a scope and a holosight on the rifle.
I have mine setup with a carry handle, with the scope on the carry handle, and the holo sight on the forearm rail.
My CH is removable, so I can switch to the holo quickly.  I'll have to upload a pic again, can't find it anymore.
