I've just finished putting another AR together and when the bolt is pulled back, the release.catch has a rough/gritty feel to it, rather than a smooth crisp break when the bolt is releasd. - What can cause this? It moves freely when upper is taken off, and there isn't any pressure on it.

i would assume because it's new. that said, as long as your bolt catch is WORKING correctly, the "smoothness" of its' functioning is about a 0.5 on a scale of 1-10 of "things that are important".

I haven't a clue what you really mean, but the BUILD is new. It works and runs fine. - The question is what makes the bolt catch not smooth like every other AR I've had or handled.

The bolt catch although a relatively simply made part is one that often needs to wear-in.  I know on my builds or new guns, it is the part most likely to malfunction in the first 100 rounds or so.  Lube it sloppy wet with CLP or similat lube (not grease) and work it by hand a bit, but it most likely will need some firing to get it smoothed out and running top notch.

As posted above, it is normal to have parts feel gritty when new.  I however would work  the part DRY for a while to help it smooth out, before putting any lubricant on it.  It will wear in with some lube on it, but it will take a lot longer to do so.

new things need to wear, "break in".
