Hi guys

I've almost decided on buying an AR15 5.56 M4 style carbine. My budget is not too high, since I'm still a student and want to save som money for ammo as well I really like the M4 style carbines, so I've been looking hard at a Stag Model 2 for just under 800$. I also looked a bit at the DPMS AP4 but it's a bit hard to find it with a chrome lined barrel (everyone tells me the wait is at least three months). Are there any other brands I should take a look at, or just buy the Stag and be happy?

If you want an off the shelf AR in that price range, Stag is the way to go...

think the general consensus is DPMS makes a fine rifle, but stag is a step above that.

i like my AR15.com SEBR bushmaster from 2005. that was a steal at 750.

Get a Stag, you'll be happy.

Why buy NEW?  Buy a used one off the EE and save a couple hundred bucks!  Learn the rifle, shoot the piss out of it, and when you hve more money buy a new gun with more extras or just upgrade the one you bought used.

Stag makes a damn good rifle.  I just really wish they didn't put a deer head on their lowers.  But that's a pretty petty complaint.

Another idea/option would be a CMMG bargain barrel special.  $550 gets you a decent shooter that you could later trade in for a new CMMG and I've heard they will give you the full amount towards the trade.  That's a rockin' proposition.

At least that way you could take the extra ~$300 and put it towards an optic (used aimpoint, etc).

Good luck,

Stag complete parts kit $633

Just add any stripped lower.

The BM snake looks pretty dumb too.

Though a deer head only costs you a hundred bucks instead of $195.

The CMMG deal is good for somebody who is on a very very very tight budget. I have seen barrels and barrels of these exact ARs at our local gun shows. I gaurantee that one of these could very easily be cleaned up and turned in to a nice beater/trunk type gun, none of them are safe queens..........but for $550 what do you expect? The only problem I have is that for just over $550 you could build a NEW AR. I would drop the $550 in a heart beat if I could choose one of the CMMG rifles from the bargin bin, however I wouldnt for a DPMS.

ETA- IIRC, all the flaws on the rifles in the bargin bins are circled, so you know what the problem is. I remember at one time seeing rifles with roll marks that were just bairly stamped or the stamp didnt stamp correctly. example: I saw a DPMS rifle where the panther stamp didnt come out correctly, from 3 feet away you would never know the difference. Most of the rifles seemd to have at least a few light marks on them, but nothing you couldnt clean up! Good luck!

By simply buying the 3 main components (complete upper, complete lower, and bolt carrier + changing handle) and putting them together myself I saved a significant amount of money. The cheapest I could find a NIB (NJ legal hop

CMMG has a sale going on where you can buy a used rifle for $550. Decent manufacturers. would be a good starter rifel.

Bushmasters are good and at a decent price. and the S&W M&P are supposedly nice rifles.

Thanks for the inputs, I think I'm going for the Stag, especially after reading the review in the Guns&Ammo Book of the AR15. My plan was to get a decent rifle, get to know it and shoot it. Get a feeling for taking it apart and then, perhaps, start to mod it a bit.

Like someone said, you can build a rifle for about ~$500.  The CMMG is still a pretty good deal for someone who doesn't want to fiddle with building a rifle.  A lot of people just want to buy a gun and are not interested in (or comfortable with) assembling a firearm.  For those people, I'd suggest the CMMG $550 special.

I'm thinking of buying one just for kicks.  It's kind of like buying from the CMP... half the excitement is wondering what you'll get.  It is luck of the draw.
