Damn, that is one heavy carbine. |

So YOU were the guy I saw with his rifle hooked up to his truck with a chain driving down a gravel road!!! *I wonder how long it will take for someone to think I was actually being serious and chew me out* |
I just throw mine in a cement mixer with a bunch of other guns. beaten........nicely beaten. |

mfingar has inspired me. I just ordered a quart of "flat dark earth" Cerakote. Photos to follow.
Stephen |
Cerakote will hold up much better than any of the paint finishes, and even better than the GK and NMR. Great choice in finishes. |
is it better than norrels? have a link? |
<img src=/images/smilies/anim_kill.gif border=0 align=middle> Thanks Tom <img src=/images/smilies/anim_heavy.gif border=0 align=middle>
It was recommended to me by a friend that works for a large weapon manufacturer as being the best/toughest aftermarket finish available. They are using it to coat many of their weapon components with great success. The price per quart is not for the faint of heart though. Stephen |
NMR that Stickman mentioned is Norrels Moly Resin. Cerakote can be found at www.nicindustries.com/micro_dyne.php, but be prepared for the sticker shock. 1 Quart cost me nearly $150 shipped. Stephen |
Excellent. Wait 'till you see what comes next. The "feel" of Cerakote reminds me of fine fabric. It's an amazing coating. Worth every penny. |

I remember the first time I saw the price tag and my jaw about hit the floor...but then I began thinking to myself. I painted my Mustang awhile back and remembered looking for different paint finishes....you get what you pay for when it comes to paint IMO...in all industries..cars or guns. |

I'd like to know also. I've painted 50+ guns with it without issue. Bomber |

You cannot defend the indefensible.......the ammunition availible to shoot holes in your position (arguement) is without limits.
I have found that the secret to Norrel's is good surface prep (as is the case with many aftermarket finish). NMR adheres best to a fresh degreased and sand blasted surface. I have a Glock 34 slide that I coated myself with hardly any signs of wear after 3000 rounds. Stephen |

Mark, GREAT job! Just curious did you do the buffer tube? I chose not to, but I will on my next build as I think there is enough tolerence to slide freely and the KAT holographic coating process is rock solid thus far so I do not expect any removal. |

I'm about to do my new AR build in FDE. I'm going to be using gunkote, but was wondering if sandblasting is absolutely necessary? I don't have access to any abrasive blasting equipment. Could I use some type of abrasive, like sandpaper or steel wool, to prep the metal? What would you guys recommend?

Thanks Vic, After sandblasting, I coated it (and all the other "gray" items) with a 50/50 mix of Duracoat FDE, and Duracoat matte clear. All the raw metal was toned-down just right. I then oversprayed it with solid FDE, to get the overall colors to look better together. The LMT buffertube has a raised portion about 3" from the receiver threads & doesn't make contact with the stock, until you get back to the raised section. LMT stocks are a tight fit without any coating. I steel-wooled the contact surfaces to make the stock operation smoother. By the way...the KAT coatings are amazing...sorry you couldn't make it to SHOT this year, I did get a chance to meet up with the KAT folks. Photos don't do that process any justice. It's pretty cool. What new parts...I'm gonna take a stab and say PMAG's, CTR, and Vicker's sling? Either way I really like the top pic. |

Thanks for the info Mark. Indeed I was disappointed I could not make it to the Shot. I was suppose to have this weapon at KAT's booth. Well I've already made my reservations for Vegas in February (Super Bowl weekend! ) and this weapon along with a few other goodies will be there!! You're right about photo's can't do this holographic paint justice....Da boys over a Bragg I guess are giving Kat some business of late. Kip over at Kat coatings tells me the paint gives professional photographers (like you) fits due to the paint changing color with different lighting conditions! hehehe |

Yeah Vickers sling -- someone had swiped my other when I went thru Amman.
A GG&G sling clipthing (the KAC dealers around here are reluctant to ship thru APO's) DD Flashlight mount - so my ghetto M1 light with the G2 hoseclamped to it coul dbe put to rest. CTR I've had since Dec 06 -- I really like it. and yeah the PMAG's -- I'm wishing they had a Ranger plate for them though --so only the ones on the gun are PMAG's -- - the access ones on my vest are USGI with Magpul follower and Ranger plate. Victor -- I have one PEQ-2A. I am loath to donate it to the GWOT - as I have been told I will not be able to leave with it... I'm looking for another PEQ-2A, or Attila, ATIPAL, IPIM, DBALA2 etc... |

I read back about how you and others where using natural light -- I noticed ones in my room suck - and the ones out side where a lot better.
The hoseclamps while functional -- took my M1 off my helmet where it can have some useage. Now I just need to get a Larue mount for my PEQ-2A. And wait for my Alumahyde to make it here. |

Thank you. This was my first time painting, so I went with the rattle can. Stock body, rail panels, and EOTech battery cover I painted with Brownells Aluma-Hyde II in Earth Brown. All the metal parts I sprayed with Brownells Gun-Kote in Dark Earth Brown. I didn't pull the delta ring assembly off the barrel so it looks crappy, but I figured when I replace the rails it would be gone anyway.

Cool. Didn't even notice the flakes on the ring til you pointed it out. Either way it looks awesome.
