Can I just cut this thing off? I get the impression that it was pressed onto the barrel over the threads, so if I cut it off the threads will be exposed and usable. I know I am probably the last guy to have one so help me get rid of it!

You have the pressed on part correct, but it was not pressed on over threads, just the plain old barrel. Best bet is to have it professionally removed, the barrel threaded and a FH installed.

I had one and sent it to ADCO.  These guys do a great job.
