Why was the "hook-type" charging handle inside the carrying handle replaced with the "pull type" charging handle behind the carrying handle?  The hook type looks a bit faster, but it seems like you might be able to get more leverage on the "pull type" ?

The on top charging handle requires a large slot on top of the receiver, a place for such things as sand to enter the action.

Also, the slot cut in the upper receiver weakened the receiver and supposedly the charging handle became extremely hot after the rifle was fired for a while.

That would make sense as well, since such a configuration would leave the charging handle much closer to the face of the bolt.  Those original charging handle weren't actually a part of the bolt, were they?
