mm, again probably not the best place but w/e -
could y'all give me a list of what makes up a recce build? like, the qualifications? from what i can tell it just needs to be super expensive

A Recce rifle is generally considered to be a carbine with a 16", high quality barrel, free-floated (often extended) rail, and some sort of optic.  Info on the "official" configuration can be found here: Wiki Linky.

The basic idea is a combat carbine that is designed to also be used for precision fire, and that is adaptable to many missions via the rail system, while maintaining its accuracy.

Tag for future pics of my rebuild recce.

And a recce can be thought of as an accurized M-4 for shooting out to 600m.

I kept pulling all my collapsable stocks back to the A1 length... so I decided to simplify my RECCE by making it a no brainer!  1/2 MOA all day long.

GTS Recon Bbl, Leupy 1.5X5 Ill SPR on a Larue 1.5, DD 12.0, Phantom 5C2, Troy Front & Rear BUIS, PRI Charging Handle, Geissele trigger, MGI buffer, Vltor A1 Clubfoot, Harris 3-6" on a Larue Mount, BFG Vickers Sling (rail mount now located close to the upper), Magpul MIAD, Magpul Ladders.

I only have a couple pics as mine is still in the build up phases. The important stuff is here though.
Lilja 16" Mod 1 barrel
13.2 Larue on the way to replace 9.0
Young Mfg Carrier
PRI gasbuster
Larue SPR mount
Knights 2 stage on the way to replace CMK
OPS Inc MB and 12th model in near future.
My scope will be the 2-10 NF
I am also trying to get my hands on either a Colt M4 upper or a Larue Stealth. Cant decide which route yet. I havnt had a real "photoshoot" for it yet so the pics are crappy but they are pics.

Your's sounds like it will end up very similar to the way I hope my (which I am still working on) will end up.

As far as the upper, If you want a Colt M4 receiver and have a C&R license, you can get one from Brownells for about $165. Only problem is the last one I got looked pretty rough. Not a huge deal but if you are interested in another option, DD is making uppers now. They are still milled from forged blanks but I'm thinking (hoping) the QC is a little better then your average CMT upper. Rainier Arms has them for $150 with or without M4 ramps...

The barrel is actually what MSTN calls the Recce Mod 1. Its a 16" with OPS Inc shoulders. It looks like edwin907's Recce. I would rather have the OPS can than the KAC so I went this route. I should have mentioned that the barrel length was 16".

You know, I didn't notice that it was 16".  It looked 18" to me for some reason at first blush.  Definitely in the Recce category

Troy sights, I'd mount it to the rail.  It's less barrel stress (every little bit helps) and you can full-on remove it (for whatever reason) without removing your flash suppressor.
If you go this route make sure you get an AK front sight adjustment tool.  I like the plastic "key" types myself, some folks like the "press" type tools.

Hokie -

I'm sure you've probably mentioned this before but would you mind explaining again why you dumped the Luepold in favor of the ACOG?

I've realized then when building a RECCE, there are 2 ways to approach it from.. Some people build theirs as basically a 16” defensive\combat carbine that can, when needed, be used for precision work. Others seem to build theirs as a precision rig that can, when needed, be used a defensive\combat carbine. I’m guessing yours is more of the former rather then latter?

Well summarized!

The former is pretty much my set up.  Keep in mind this is my situation and may differ from others....

From my experience participating in courses or drills or exercises beyond the range, I conclude that any 'real world' apocalyptic SHTF application of an AR15 will be in a venue under 200 yards with repetative shooting over 200 yards being rare.  I've ALWAYS wanted a 'do-it-all' and rugged AR15.  When the TA33R8 came out - it made the configuration possible.

I've never taken a $1,000 scope and dragged it behind my truck, but I've always felt scopes couldn't match the structural integrity of an ACOG.  RE: the ACOG, something always kept me from hanging on to them...the TA31 eye relief is too short, the TA11 is too big, the compacts aren't versatile for longer ranges, the FOV and eye relief never seemed to balance well for me.... the list goes on.  Then Trijicon took all the best parts of each of the ACOG models and crammed them into the TA33.  That was half the battle.

Also, when dialing my scopes in, I find that there's nothing I can hit with the 5X SPR crosshairs of the 1.5X5 that I can't hit with a 3X. Plus the fiber optic's in the ACOG is just simply too sweet to beat.  The glass is superb, the frame is bombproof, the tritium gives you perfect contrast at dawn & dusk, and the customer service is unmatched.

Beyond that, I found the Leupold's M2 BDC dials to be overly complicated and a waste of space.  I also think a SHTF gun should be 'dumbed down' as much as possible, putting the BDC inside the scope, not outside.

I figure the best 'RECCE' configuration is a defensive carbine that can dabble with precision shooting.  My gun still has a Geissele trigger, MGI buffer, DD12.0, and 16" GTS Recon Barrel.  The accuracy is there and the recoil is minimal.  The 3X Chevron & BDC gets me to the extended minute of man ranges I need and want to reach out too.  The speed of the smaller FOV & overall small diameter of the ACOG makes for a real fast optic and the BAC only aids that.  I just think that the ACOG is a better "RECCE" optic for a match carbine than a precision scope. The overall weight of the whole carbine is about 8.5 lbs empty.

To sum up, the TA33 gives my AR15 a little more 'defensive' edge that my Leupold did NOT.  I feel 10-300 yard speed is more important than 50-500 yard precision.  That's how I see these two scopes anyway.  AR15's should allow you to be fast & accurate at ANY range.  I think the TA33 outshines the Leupold in this regard.  Hope that explains it better.  It's my take on things, I'm sure others will agree or disagree.

...and when a trade offer came in for a large healthy volume of red box Hornaday 75-grain LEO 5.56 TAP ammo...the decision to offload the Leupy was indisputable.
