Great report. I doubt the HK's will be available to civilians but I'd settle for that stock off the 417.

We can only wish the Border Patrol would have/use some of that hardware to secure our borders.
Looks like fun.
Border patrol and enforcement is becoming more and more prominent in the LE community. |
Yeah, I think I could use one of those M2 .50 equipped trucks up here.

Great write up and pics. I talked to Mark LaRue on his cell on his way home from there and he didn't mention your marksmanship on the Ma Deuce on his target . Thanks for taking the time and sharing the input to both you and PL-W. Cheers, Denny |

The 417 was fitted with 12.5" or 13" barrel if I recall correctly - it was shorter that the 14.5" 5.56mm weapons HK had there.
Denny, I think Mark realized it wasn't intentional after Darren unreservedly apologized for his poor markmanship - he was great at hitting the mountain though! The interesting fact was that in excess of 95% of the weapons shown were piston driven. All of the direct gas impingement weapons there were only used to demonstrate the accessories fitted to them. |

Mother of god, that thing must have a crazy muzzle blast. |

coool stuff man! I always wondered what was the best way to mount a 50 cal to my pickup.
Thanks for the excellent post.
Your fearless leader doesn't fear eye injuries either |

Thats a sweet pic on the truck, and CAN WE PLEASE SEE PICS OF THE truck you were shooting at ?!?!?!!?
FN F2000! Wooo! Lucky. It looks bulky but I cant stand it...I gotta have one.
Was that the elusive Nightforce 1-4 on the HK417 or was it a 2-10?
Thanks nms |
Looks like the 1-4 to me...the tube past the turrents looks too short to be the 2.5-10. |

Is this "Expo" for showing off the latest tools, or would you call it a direct opportunity to nail down PO's from these organizations?
I know you mentioned getting some business from Army unit, and others, so I guess the question is "was this the primary mission? (isn't it always? ) TIA.....and congratulations to those involved. It looks as though L-W products are getting some traction. |
I forgot I didn't have them on until the RSO picked it up (I'd taken them off to use the camera) - at one point the wind got up to 60 mph and with the sand blowing we were all preety happy to have them on. |
It's a bit of both; some of the gear there is in service and some is under evaluation - it's basically a fairly laid back way for the govt and local LE buyers to see what manufacturers have - it's not as busy as SHOT or NDIA for example. Our primary mission there was to turn up as Border Patrol had requested we be there. They have some of our weapons under evaluation and I suspect wanted to show off that fact - the orders we took there paid for the trip. It's a good venue all round and it's always good to meet up with professional vendors - even if some of them are your direct competition. |

Goes both ways! For instance the HK rep shot our weapons too and had equally nice things to say. As a matter of fact, he even said the LW gun was smoother with less recoil, but as I said before, neither had significant muzzle rise.
I said before this was due to a staged vent and then realized this may not mean anything to anybody. The HK self regulating system uses a piston with a plug on the end. Once the piston has moved enough to overcome mass and spring tensions, the plug has moved out of the vent hole and the gas is vented. Once the piston reaches the end of its travel it vents the excess under the rail. The mass of moving components and the buffer weight may also have direct bearing on on the handling differences. HK also uses a far less stout spring on their piston. The LW piston cup (moving part) has a stepped internal diameter. The nozzle it rides on has a a corresponding collar. So no venting until the cup clears the collar, once the piston moves off the collar it starts to vent through the rest of the stroke, when the piston is in full recoil all of the gasses are vented through 3 holes in the cup. The result is the push off (length of the collar) uses 100% of tapped pressure followed by a progressive venting until the full dump. The vented gasses are subsonic. We need to do a cutaway or an animation of the cycle so people that are interested in it, understand what and why it works the way it does. The LW and HK systems are more similar than different in the way they work. The LW is essentially the same but by a reverse method. The cup over nozzle (LW) vs the piston in cup do the exact same thing. The advantage the LW system has is it can be retrofitted using a standard AR FSB or gas block, less mass in recoiling parts (hollow) and the gasses and carbon can be redirected out of the piston cup and piston cup vent holes. Every return stroke of the cup the nozzle scrapes the inside of the cup to break up any carbon to be blown out with the next round. |

Looks like you had a great time 48th...doesn't Texas have a bylaw about Canadians shooting full auto?
Texas doesn't, but I do. Any Canadian that makes their way to the my territorry gets unlimited trigger time (within reason ). The reason for this is, every Canadian that spends any time with me is going to get a soft lesson on how oppressive their government has been to them. Not that I need to tell gunloving Canucks, but the ones not exposed loose their inherent fear of evil weapons and realize it is the same as a car or a hammer. A tool to be used or misused by the operator.

If I ever make it down your way again..expect a knck on your door. Although Mojo did a great job reminding me with his suppressed mp5 and m16... Got any C2's or gpmg's? |
