I have an older(1994) Colt Sporter marked .223 cal.

Is it safe to shoot 5.56mm through a gun marked .223 cal?

Please dont flame me too hard for asking...I dont want to ruin my rifle.

I can't tell you for sure, but if it is not marked 556, don't shoot it, stick to 223. Someone else may be able to tell you more.

Usually it's not recommended because of the tight chamber on the .223 and the higher pressure differences with the 5.56mm.  It's not worth the chance of a KB.

5.56mm is fine to shoot .223 and 5.56mm through, but .223 should be .223 only.

Check the barrel markings. If it's the original Colt barrel it'll say C MP 5.56 NATO and some kind of twist rate (1/7, 1/9).  I don't know of ANY original Colt ARs barrels that are not 5.56 chambered, no matter what the lower says.

Thank You, that is what it says.

Makes me feel stupid.
