Here are some pics of my SPR build that I shot out to 920 yards..the top 6 rounds are the .223 75gr. BHs....with all the changing wind, it took 45moa and 10moa of windage. the steel is 20"x16"
 the bigger marks are from my .308 can you see the target in the middle?

I hit past 1000m with Mk262 target practicing while I was in Iraq out of a rack gradde M16A4, Alot of folks underestimate the 5.56's power and obtainable distances. Good work man.

Nice rifle and shots. I guess with groups liek that from that far, you wont have to worry about hitting houses.

Could you hear the "ping" out that far with the .223? I'm going to start shooting out at 600 again this spring. I really, really enjoy the challenge. I'd love to get out even further, but 600 is the best I have access to. Shouldnt complain, I know many who dont have the opportunity to shoot past 100.

no ping because the plate is sitting on the ground with another welded on steel leg..
And no...it took about 6 rounds to get on target... but once on, it was 6 for 6. Again...thanks to Steve for ADCO for all the major parts. THe rifle shoots the 77grs better but the velocity is a little slower.. its shooting the BHS 75 at 60degrees--2630fps out of a 18" Wilson WOA SPR barrel. the 77s were shooting about 2600. My Pacnor 16" chronoed the same....a hair more accurate...should have kept it thinking that the 18" will be faster...oh well..shoots well anyway. Either way..its all about shot placement..and I wouldnt want to be on the recieving end regardless of whether it is a .223 or .308 |

When I started my last rifle build I decided to go with 5.56 because it is very capable of long range shooting and I am just plain used to shooting it. I shoot only Mk262 right now but might try some 75 grn later on based on your findings. It seems lots of folks think that if it is not 30 caliber then it is just a nuicance to get hit with it unless it is within 100 meters, lots of misinformation out there about it. Good job man, as soon as I an get a range over 300 yards I will start figuring out my come ups on my rifle and try to max it out also.

by that distance, its most likely subsonic...but there is no sign of consistent keyholeing of the round. As you can see, the steel has distinct round marks....They start to look alittle uneven because there is about 20 coats of paint and by that time the paint is starting to chip with each hit.
poke 6 holes in the bad guy...hes most probably crying "uncle!!" or dead. Correct me if I am wrong..wouldnt a round that slow start to tumble if it penetrates tissue? Also...anyone know of a dealer for MK262? other than Cabelas?...or do I have to wait until the war is over...or should I reload....But I tell you, in a semi auto sniper rifle....my mags get empty real fast...I'll need a lot of the Mk262. The Mk262 may still be supersonic..since it runs about 150fps faster than a factory round....right? |

It is hard to get in any large quantity, Black Hills will only sell it to the military except for some factory seconds to a couple retailers but you can find it. I have about 220 rnds left of it right now and need to find more. As for it being faster than factory rounds I do believe it is but not sure. I know it will reach out and touch tho. I know that in my ACOG (TA31F) it hit at 1000 Meters with a hold over 1/3 up from bottom between the bottom of the glass and bottom of the reticle. I do believe the round is still supersonic at this distance.

the white "shed" to the left of target is a green house where I store my ATVs about 75 yards to the left...All the houses you can see are about 1.5 to 2 mile away... the actual picture is zoomed in with the camera here is the pic at 1x this picture actually makes you appreciate the distance..

45 MOA isn't bad. 1000 meters is 48.5 for my gun, shooting ever so slightly up hill. A lot of people doubt the 223. They shouldn't. It's pure evil with a suppressor.

Over 700 rounds not a single malfunction and I only clean it every 200 rounds.... |

Probably shot OVER the trees to reach that distance... ~1000yds with .223 is VERY obtainable, (AR platforms in .223 have been used for 1000yd long-range comp) although your rounds are basically following a goddamn arty trajectory |

Nice shooting! I don't doubt the .223's ability to hit at those ranges, I just would much rather have the energy of a .308 over 300 yards.

the trace behind the spotting scope was pretty substantial.......Dont know if it simply because its a smaller round but when the .308 hits you know it did without a spotting scope because the shrapnel created blows all over the place and kicks up dirt right and left of the plate as if someone hit it with a machine gun...The .223 you know you hit it if there is no dirt pickedup around the plate....othewise you need the spotter......which we could still make out the marks on the plate with the ol' trusty Leupold 12-40 scope

Ever get a chance to shoot log range with someone and have a spotting scope then try reading the bullet traces. The 5.56 does look like and artillary trajectory. Shooting a .50cal at 2500 meters looks about the same, I cant even read the traces half the time but useing tracers you can watch the round drop into the view of the scope and hit the target. I was shooting at 800 meters with Iron sights here in Kansas at SDM school and I had to adjust all the way for elevation and hold over by 4 targets for ele. and 6 for wind (wind was at about 15 MPH) |

I assume you are using a National Match rifle or standard M16? What ammo were you using?
I'm thinking I should try my British SS109 at this distance and see what it does,.,,,,So far this lot has been very accurate as well and runs alot hotter. |

That is the same barrel I have been looking at. My handloaded 69gr. SMK's are starting to keyhole around 800 yds with my 20" 1:9" barrel. I have been worried about keeping it from going subsonic with an 18" barrel.

That's incredible. You should feel proud.
For whoever was worried about using a 16" bbl at 600m, don't worry. I used a 14.5 at 500+m. Granted my precision wasn't quite at this level. Using an EOTech I was able to make fairly consistent (70% I'd estimate) hits on a target the same size as shown. This level of accuracy shown is just great. Good job! |

bolt action or AR...novice or pro...I cant imagine anyone be able to shoot a .223 or .308 first round at that range,,,it aint easy..the biggest problem is the wind....On a clear day Mirage is hard to read and since we need to read the wind over the tree tops....and since there is about 60-100 yards between each tree line....with its own wind direction....and since there is so many treeslines overlapping each other, makes it damn near impossible to read the wind accurately...would love to take David Tubb out there and learn how guys like him read the wind in this kind of tactical situation where there are no wind flags....

I use an anemometer to read wind at the barrel and then judge my center wind and target wind accordingly and average it all out in my head and then make a SWAG, then cross my fingers and throw salt over my shoulder and pray. I am usualy a fair judge of wind useing this method.

Ahh ok, just wondering, not flaming you or anything. That is awesome shooting though. I can do it with my REM 700 .308, but I have not tried with my AR yet. I have a 1500 yd range available, I guess next weekend I can go try.

I've seen the Marine Corps Team shooting 77s from their 20-inch M16s at Quantico, and while it can be done (with sighters, of course) it isn't pretty. The bullets usually come in at the edge of supersonic (they'd still put a bullet hole in a person), but after they go through the cardboard backer and hit the earth berm many have bounced into the trees and back near the target lifters. |
