I decided to take my pilot off my walther today and screw it on my SP1 with m-261 kit. I don't understand why its still so loud. Wouldn't the longer bbl make it more quiet then the P-22's short BBL. Any suggestions? I know I am not going to get hollywood quiet but I was expecting better then that. I was using CCI subsonics. I also tried standard velocity ammo. Both really sucked.
 Is the pilot primarily designed only for pistols?

Longer barrel = more velocity.
AR with conversion kit = more action noise too. |

Are you saying it's louder or just not quieter through your rifle?
"Not quieter" is not suprising, "louder" would be a puzzler. Suppressors are engineered to lower the dB level by a certain degree by trapping and/or redirecting the gas flow from the muzzle. Length of bbl would not affect the dB level as much since all of the gas is still being absorbed by the suppressor, 3" bbl or 20". I have forgotten much from my Class III days so hopefully someone will come along with more expertise than me. |

Standard 20 inch lightweight bbl. Not so much louder but almost about the same as amount of sound as my walther, very little difference.
Some of the other factors might be location. I was in my garage with the door down firing into a large block of wood from maybe about 20 feet. Hard to find a good outdoor range that's not miles away these days.

I noticed the same thing with my Ruger 10/22. The supersonic crack seems extra loud to my ear because the muzzle report is not there to cover it up. Try some subsonic.
I also have function fired my suppressed .22s in my garage and it is much louder than outside in an open area. |

I suspect you just are not familiar with the supersonic componant of the sound yet. I would suggest some Remington Subsonic, or PMC moderator which will not cycle it's so subsonic. The CCI subsonic should have been fine though. Also get something uber fast like the Remington Stinger or Vipers or Velocitors and try shooting them in your P22 and see if it sounds similar to your rifle. if so then it's velocity not muzzle report.

Guys, he said he WAS using subsonics. I have seen similar results with an Outback and a 10/22 VS Walther p22. Even with subsonics, for some reason the 10/22 is as loud if not louder than the tiny 3.5" walther barrel.

Just because the box says subsonic does not mean it's subsonic in your application.
Also if your 10-22 has a bit looser chamber and low pressure subsonics are not expanding the brass and sealing the chamber you will get noise out the chamber area of the gun. Play with different ammo. |
