I have a stock Bushmaster A2 buttstock. Is there a special way of inserting the buffer spring? It wasn't doing the "sproingggg" noise before. I'm thinking I might have put it in the wrong way?

My Bushie M4, does not make the "sproinggg" noise at all.

it should "sproing". the sproing is your friend. that is all.

Just take the spring out, you don't need it anyway.

But seriously, I think most of them do that anyway; you'd have to try real hard to put that spring and buffer in "wrong".

Put CLP into the buffer tube.

I should've known, searched for it. Seems to be a feature, not a bug hehehe.

How come I never noticed it before? and my DPMS 308 does not have that "sproing" noise?

MGI Military sells a 'Super 2X' reciol spring. Quote from their web site:

"Our SUPER 2X Recoil spring is unique in that it is made from music wire. This not only increases the strength of the recoil spring more then 2 times that of a conventional recoil spring but also gets rid of that annoying ?bong? sound made by the traditional steel spring."

-sounds good, but its a little pricy, $30.

I shot an M1A for years. Had never shot a AR. First time I shot my buddies and heard that sproing noise I thought WTF

Wasn't hard for me. I just put it in sideways. Fit was poor, but at least I proved you wrong.

My old Bushmaster's "sproingggg" warmed my heart; it reminded me of the soind my childhood Daisy "red-rider" style BB gun made. My USMC issued Colt M16A2 didn't sproing right; it reminded me of a real nice RWS air rifle - still good.

Buddy assembled his rifle, forgot to put in the buffer and spring and the first time he pulled on the charging handle the bolt just went straight back and got stuck in the buffer tube.

Hows a group return to all major AR manufacturer's due to this sproing sound sound?

kinda hard to remove those brass marks, but you can try a decent gun cleaner solvent.

on the other hand, you can do what I do, apply a thin piece of rubber on the deflector. Clean any grease or solvents off the deflector and then use a glue like rubber cement to attach a piece of rubber to it. Its not permanent, but it works fantastically.

You can also get some single sided sticky tape as it works great as well.

Thats why you are supposed to clean the buffer tube out each time you clean your rifle. Or at least according to the Bushmaster manual you are.

Thats why you are supposed to clean the buffer tube out each time you clean your rifle. Or at least according to the Bushmaster manual you are.

cleans much easier when there is no oil in it
ETA: your not supposed to lube it anyway

I put grease in mine. Dont put to much or it will sqeeze out past the plunger and into the lower. Don't ask me how I know this.

I did this on my first AR and was'nt used to the spring noise and someone said that grease would quiet it down.

Now I jus have a thin coating, it seems quieter. I have not put any on the other 2 AR's though. I've gotten used to and like the sound.

I just use some of the solvent that dissolves copper. I usually take one of the patches I have run through the bore thats not to dirty and wipe the brass marks off. Comes right off.

The more you shoot it, your mind will get used to hearing "sproing" and it won't be so obvious.
I know mine still makes the noise (had somone else shoot it, they hear it), but I've heard it so much that I don't notice it anymore.

Also, if you LIGHTLY put some oil or CLP on the spring, it'll take alot of it away. A tiny bit is all it takes. Maybe A drop on your finger, and then apply with your finger.

You can try a Tubb AR recoil spring. The sproing doesn't go away, but it's not as noticeable.

I don't understand why some people would unecessarily start oiling or greasing rifle parts because of a slight NOISE.

Since it is NOT a defect, but in fact the way the rifle just happens to sound, why in the world would you try to "fix" it by adding grease or oil to a part of the rifle that is not required.

Are you guys recommending greasing Garand clips too, to avoid the sound when it ejects?

When I'm shooting rapid fire on a line of 25+ guys, that "sprong" is the only thing other than counting my rounds that tell me when I'm done. You'll be shooting along: Sprong,.....sprong....spoink and when you don't hear the spring spring back up that's when you know.

The very first AR I shot was an M16 in basic, and I was certain that the trainee before me reassembled the weapon incorrectly when I heard the sproing.

My exact thought was also "WTF"

I have an Enidine buffer in one of my carbines. It seems to tame the spring noise to a degree, but there is still a spring, and so there is still noise. Learn to appreciate it, unless you do away with the spring, you will always have the noise.

the sproing is good.... but colts seem to be louder. SPRIONG, SPRIONG, JAM! For all of you that actually answered his question, this is whats known as a "joke" because these 2 questions get asked about once a week and the answer to both is the same: it is normal.
the sproing is normal, if you don't like it that much maybe try a different weapon, or shoot with no plugs, then you can't hear it (again, a joke)
Brass marks are normal and if little brass marks worry you that much you should just keep your rifle in the safe otherwise you may scratch it somewhere else too...
