My only experience with short-barrelled uppers is the 10.25" upper I bought from Model 1 Sales, and I have been extremely satisfied with it.

I've got thousands of rounds through it, using crappy ammo - and had one single FTE after 600 rounds - and that was BEFORE adding all the fancy stuff, like a crane O-ring, heavy buffer and all the other stuff that everyone claims is absolutely necessary for short uppers.  Since putting in a crane O-ring, and a heavy buffer, it has run completely flawlessly.  Keep in mind that most people woudl automatically add those up front anyway - so it really is pretty nice that it had only one hiccup in 600 rounds without those things.

If I had more money, I might have gotten a CMMG or LMT upper - but I'm just pointing out that this thing has been amazingly reliable, despite being significantly cheaper.

If I were to get another - and may - it will likely be either

Colt 10.3

LMT 10.5

Noveske 10.5

Once you shoot a shorty, it is difficult to go back.

IF Michigan allowed SBRs, I think that I’d get an LMT 10.5 upper or a Leitner-Wise piston upper.

i have two 1/7 11.5" bushmasters. they both run like a top.

ETA: check around the M16 board. i believe there are quite a few suppressor manufacturers that *do not* want their product on anything less then 11.5" barrels. if you are thinking about suppressing it, this may be a consideration for you.

10.5 LMT from any venfor on the board, not to interested in spending twice the amount on a piston system, when the current system has never given me any issues,

bigbore, how does the extended gas system effect the weapon, just curious, my 10.5 lmt has been perfect but i am always open to new ideas for future builds

I have two SPR type rifles.

Both lowers are Stag with RRA 2-stage trigger and A1 stock from Moore Militaria.

Uppers are Stag: one is A2, the other is A3.  Both uppers have Stag B/BC/CH.  These can be bought in combo deals through several vendors.

Both use White Oak Armament SPR barrel: one is threaded; the other is not.  Adco also carries this barrel.  The barrel comes clean, and you will need to have a FSB attached.  On both of mine, I use an adjustable/match FSB.  When you buy the barrel from either WOA or Adco, I suggest that you have your FSB done then.  Both companies do excellent work.

Both use a carbon fiber free float tube: one is a Clark; the other is a Briley.  Both are good tubes.  The Briley is a slightly larger diameter.

Mine shoot well below MOA and absolutely love Sierra 77 and 80 grain bullets, on just about all powders used: IMR-4895, VV-133, VV-135, and even IMR-4064.

You can have WOA or Adco build one, or you can have the fun of doing it yourself.

I highly recommend both WOA and Adco for top of the line service and work.  Both are honorable and trustworthy.

Edited, because I cannot spell write right the first time.

You CAN have a SBR in MI now.

Steve,

MGs are now legal, but SBRs are not.

Steve,
the problem that SBR's have is insufficient dwell time, requiring a gas port that is quite large.  As the barrel grows longer, dwell time increases, reaching optimal length at about the length of the original M16 barrel beyond the port.  Mid length and M4 barrels have the same length of barrel beyond the port as well.

Please explain how your upper improves the timing.  We are often told that 11.5s are better than 10.5s due to their improved timing, but your design effectively turns an 11.5 into a 10.5, as far as timing is concerned.

What am I missing?

I like pie but For an SBR'd AR I would like to try a piston upper. They are a little too pricey for me right now though. I have 2 standard CMMG uppers on my SBR's and they are very nice.

I need to put my other parts on it (just slapped the two halves together this morning), but another vote for the LMT 10.5" upper.

Imagine an EOTech, Troy rear flip up, Phantom C2, and a .223 can to complete the picture.
