Meet Project Raven V2.5:

Douglas SS 12" 6.8 1/11 barrel
LaRue 12.0
Troy FBS-R
Troy FBS-F
Troy MMD
CMT 6.8 Bolt w/ Wolff springs and Colt insert
CMT M16 Bolt and carrier
Surefire Scoutlight with LU60A Bezel and FM63 IR Filter
PRI Gasbuster CH
LaRue GasBlock (chopped)
TD VFG, Panels, and Battlegrip in FDE
Schmidt Bender 1.1-4x20 PMII CQB "Short Dot"
LaRue SPR-E Mount

VLTOR Stock (FDE) and Receiver Extension
Bushy SBR Lower
CQD Receiver Endplate Sling Loop
Magpul TriggerGuard
CMC Single Stage Curved Trigger

With 110 VMAX factory loads, it has more than 40 yards more frag range than an M4 with 5.56 75 grain TAP. With the AMAX, it hovers around 0.8 MOA out to 200 yards or so (with proper optics, a good shooter, and a good rest). And yes, when I went to take the pics I grabbed the wrong ammo can, so you can see it with a 5.56 mag for now.

Weight is 9.2 lbs loaded with 25 rounds of 6.8 in a PRI mag. Seeing as how that weight includes the 29 oz Short Dot and mount, I think it's pretty handy. The next version will be about a pound lighter, more accurate, more reliable, and a helluva lot cooler.

I dig it.

If I can con Bill Alexander out of a 14.5" in your namesake w/o a perm attached flash suppressor, I'm going to be building one of them up to T&E for a few local PDs that are admiring the price tag.

Thanks for the kind words guys... Believe me when I say, you ain't seen nothin' yet!

When did CMT start making 6.8 bolts? What 6.8 mags are those that'll take a Ranger plate? Good looking gun!

Those are actually 5.56 mags. The ammo can with the PRI mags was in my car, the one with 5.56 mags was in the Hummer. The car was outta gas, the Hummer wasn't, so when I got in I saw an ammo can in the back and assumed... Well, you know what happens when you assume It made for a really short day at the range!

I'll get some 200-300 yard results up, time permitting.

Oh yeah, CMT has been making 6.8 bolts for a while (at least 2 or 3 months) now. Thanks for the compliments!

Look at the top rail in the first pic, you can see the Surefire mount pretty clearly.

Doh thanks. Viking Tactics mount?

that is crazily sexy.  I dont care for the 6.8spc caliber but that rig is pimpin'

EDIT: bot to hijack but does Magpul make a recoil pad for their M93B?  B/c there are some threaded holes in the buttplate perfect for attaching a recoil pad.

Nah, it's a Surefire Scout with an M76 offset mount. It's mounted on the 12:00 rail, and it's offset to my non-dominant side. Check that little SF large head screw underneath the SPR-E mount? That's it. I'll get some better pics tomorrow.

While not exactly true to the name (it started out on paper as a 10.5" 5.56 w/ a DD RAS and a VLTOR stock, now it's just a shorty AR meant for certain people) I think it's pretty cool if you think about where the name came from. Since the 6.8 is a major car-punching SOB compared to the 5.56, I think it's a better mousetrap for folks in that field. But hey, I'm biased.

Looks pretty good and seems to shoot as well, Capn'. Are you planning on any of the 110/115gr OTMs? Also, I look forward to a 6.5G evaluation (and DocGKR's report) on a 16" or shorter 6.5G. It is like one of those itchs, you can't scratch enough.

Thx IM or email me when you get ready to build and I'll release the tech package to you. It was made with guys in your profession in mind.

I forgot to add what's so special about this... It's a midlength gassed 12" barrel, the next iteration will use a 0.5" longer Mike Rock barrel with a slightly smaller gasport.

Yojimbo, I have a project inspired by Kurosawa named the "Yojimbo" as well... I think I might IM you some pics and info, as I believe you might enjoy it.

Pete, just waiting on Vyse to get more gel out and I'll report back on the 115 grain OTM. The 110 is lower on the list, but not very far.

When it comes to the Grendel, the main attraction is the price, and the possibility that the new SP load by Wolf might be a good performer against auto glass. We'll know soon enough.

Capn, you say it's an SBR with a middy? Now I'm really intrigued. That sucker needs a 6.5 Grendel clone!

Just to confirm, you're talking a 9.5" "mid-length" gas-port position, right? If so, how much barrel do you have left fore of the gas-block? (I guess the math is 12" bbl minus 9.5" port position, but the missing figure is the length of your gas block.) And what should the gas-port diameter be?

I love that build: love the Vltor clubfoot and the rest of the furniture in tan or FDE or whatever it is, love the LaRue stuff, love the S&B, love the Troy sights. That's just a very, very solid machine and, no doubt, a useful tool. Good job!

Update:

Raven 5.56 mockup. Same SBR Lower, but with:

KAC 10" "Two-Too-Long" FFRAS
LMT Crane Stock
LMT Front Sight
SF M95LT-XM06
KG'ed 12" Lilja midlength gassed 1/7 5.56 barrel I had cut, turned down, and rethreaded
CMT MP'ed M16 Bolt and Carrier (Bolt has Wolff XP Extractor Spring)
PRI GasBuster CH

I stole the Troy MMD off of the 6.8 because I can't find the spare Vortex I had set aside. This will be getting the chopped LaRue Gasblock from the 6.8 when it gets torn down and a Troy Suppressor Mount if I can get one before I finish gel and chrono testing. If not, it'll head to a new home like it is shown above (albeit with a gasblock and gastube).

When I get it running I'll let you guys know how it works.

Cap, that 29 oz. optic is all the more reason for a slickside upper and a PRI tube with an alloy nut.

I think I am forming a plan.

I was actually thinking about running a 10.5" LW barrel with a PRI 9" tube w/ AL nut and enough rail for a front BUIS and a Scoutlight. The optic I was thinking about was the new TA31DOC, minus the DOC.

I think that'd be one fast setup.

Anyhow, here's some comparo pics of the 5.56 versus a Romanian SAR3.

I ran close to 630 rounds through that AR, and about 210 rounds through the SAR3. I just fixed the trigger slap on the SAR3 and I just wanted to make sure it still worked.

SAR3 with irons averaged about 5" at 100 yards with irons with SA M193 ball, and about 2.5" with the Short Dot atop. The CQBR-ish thing shot about 3" at 100 with irons, and around 1.5" with the Short Dot. Very unscientific, I know.

To make a long story short, the 5.56 version of Project Raven fared fine. No malfunctions, barrier penetration with the heavy bonded Federal rounds was adequate, and it was accurate. Compared to the 6.8 results, I'm a little disappointed. The ProHunter Silver State 6.8 loads cut through auto body material like a hot knife through butter and still made a nasty wound profile. The 5.56 punches through, but it isn't as spectacular.
