So I am in a debate with a fellow officer... When mounting something to a MIl Spec rail do you:

A) Pull the mount back (towards the stock) and lock it down
or
B) Push it foward (towards the muzzle) and lock it down

I say "A" and that is the way I have always done it but he swears at some class the instructor said to push it foward first... Who is right?

It depends upon what you are mounting.

i would say forward so it won't shift on recoil. In the forward position there is no where to go as it's metal on metal.

You may be confusing it with the following;
Now you do just the opposite when putting the action of a rifle in a stock. Push the action all the way back so it has no where to go but against wood or fiberglass.

OK I guess I may be wrong here but when mounting, say an optic, would you pull back or push forwards? I have ALWAYS pulled back an it wasn't until I saw him push forward until that I began to question it.

Does it really make a difference?

Everything I've mounted to a rail has such a small amount of play I can't see that it would matter. My ARMS BUIS, various light mounts, VFG's etc...all have so little space between the cross bar and the notch in the rail I don't believe it would be an issue.

Vert grips should be pulled back and locked dow (if the grip has a lever or screw mount) Optics and most everything else should be pushed forward. If not, the recoil of the gun can push them forward for you.
