I am going to make a WAG (Wild Ass Guess) . . . .
The Colt AR was originally marked .223 cal (223 rem) as it preceded the 5.56 NATO classification and they just kept it that way. We (civilians) think of .223 as a Saami designation, but Saami came long after the 5.56 NATO. |

My 1972 sp1 says .223?
I almost never shoot .223 in it.

Colt engraved "Colt 223" on the side of the upper receiver on many of their Complete upper conversion kits.
